About
This is a brand-new art museum in center city Charlotte, N.C. I found the museum to be interesting, but with significant limitations for serious lovers of modern art.

Yes, it is small, but we thought all the better for it, with fascinatingly curated exhibits. If you want to see a broader spectrum of art, go to the Mint. When we visited the museum had a special exhibition called “Flora” which was a brilliant reawakening of the life of Flora Mayo an otherwise forgotten American artist who played an important part in the life of the sculptor Giacometti in Paris in the mid 20th century. The storytelling was poignant and made our group reflect on the ephemeral nature of status, connections and family. One thing I particularly praise the museum for is that it dealt with exhibits containing social issues without the hectoring or ‘right think’ extremism that one often now expects in the arts. - MEHEL3Fayetteville, North Carolina1,287 contributionsNice WorksOur visit was 17 February 2024 after my Hot Chocolate 5K Run. Although sunny outside it was breezy and cold. We went to this museum, which was good. Some unique works, with 4 floors, stairs & elevator. Staff were helpful, polite, and pleasant. Spent about 45 minutes and loved the big mirror statue outside. Something different.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 March 2024

Peaceful atmosphere. I felt like the museum really wanted to me to enjoy seeing the art.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024

Front desk gal made us toss our coffees that we just purchased. We paid $18 to see four floors of art that could have all fit on one floor. Very little artwork on walls. It was like paying to see art in my house.

I love the design of this building. When reading about the museum, I saw the Mr Bechtler was friends with the artist and sculptor Jean Tinguely . It mentioned that there were Tinguely artworks there. I am a fan of Jean Tinguely since I was lucky enough to discover his art when in Switzerland. It moves, it's quirky and fun. Well here, there are two...actually one and a miniature replica. The real one actually moves every two hours, and I happened to see it while I was there, otherwise it's static. The replica also moves and you can see the original somewhere in Charlotte. There are 4 levels to the museum and the galleries on each floor are very small. You can be out of there in an hour, if you want. Can't say this museum wowed me.

Admission was free when we visited because they are changing over the exhibit on the 4th floor. What was on view on floors 2 and 3 was pretty minimal (the personal collection of the donors only?) and didn't take much time to appreciate. The lighting could have been a little better. In the lobby there's a small scale replica of a mechanical sculpture that hangs in the lobby of a hotel a few blocks away. We enjoyed that more than the museum itself, so we were glad to learn about it because we visited here. When they charge admission again, it would be worth asking how much art is on the 4th floor and what the exhibition is.

Do not let the title of this review fool you. This review is not about a miniature museum, though I did find the Bechtler Museum rather small.
Initially I wanted to visit the Mint Museum that is right next door, but I must admit that I was intrigued by the doorway area and the art outside.
I could tell that this museum was not very large but it was too late.....I was already sold.
Overall, decent museum with some nice pieces but as I stated there is not much to it if you are looking to occupy a lot of time.
We got through this museum in say any hour. Some quality pieces. Very clean and COVID considerate.
There are little nooks through so make sure you cover all the ground and don't forget to check out the pieces outside on the top floor (I believe).
I was hoping for some North Carolina history/flair but that appeal was not there.
All and all, decent time. Maybe more of a thing to do if you visit both museums.
Enjoy!

This museum is on the smaller side. It only takes 1 -2 hours to view the entire collection. We loved the Andy Warhol special exhibit as well as the special audio visual art. We would go back!

This was very disappointing. We paid $18 to see about 18 pieces of bad art. There were four floors of virtually nothing. We have been to a number of modern art places in our lives, but nothing as sad as this.

In all honesty, we only came to view Charlotte’s Firebird Statue — and it’s definitely worth stopping by to snap some photos of this unique statue by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. It’s right by some delicious restaurants so it’s easily accessible & convenient for “on the go-ers”! Would def include in a Charlotte itinerary.

As described by others, the number of exhibits is limited, but it includes several art pieces from Picasso, Miro, Niki de Saint Phalle etc.
Interesting were the drawings from different artists, who created small sketches for the 60th birthday of Hans Bechtler.
The highlight was the film, which was created by artist Yasumasa Morimura. He stars as eleven artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol.

Our visit to the Bechtler on 9/23/2023 was very disappointing. They had three small exhibits in three rooms, two of which were a real yawn. The last was merely ok. If the Bechtler is going to survive as a museum they are going to have to do much better. Overall, the impression we left with was that the Bechtler seems to be a large, fancy building with very little in it.
