The Rachel Carson component of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve & National Estuarine Research Reserve is located between the mouths of the Newport and North rivers in southern Carteret County, directly across Taylor's Creek from the historic town of Beaufort. It is accessible only by boat (local ferry vendor, private vessel, or canoes and kayaks).

The reserve, which consists of several islands is very easily reached by a small ferry from Beaufort. We enjoyed our morning visit so much we visited a second island after lunch. Wide variety of birds and good views of the wild horses.

i bought these horses in 1968 and in the early 80's the state got the island and took my horses.i never received one dime for the horses.my name is mack oneal..a DR .and an old man owned them together.both were aged so i bought them...More

Yes there are wild horses and trails. However , Bird Shoals. Shakelford,Bear Island and Sand dollar Island do too. They are more beautiful with areas for shelling and swimming. If you like shrubs and. Ugh then you'd be happy. Otherwise ,chose one of the others....More

I'm trying to reconcile my experience with the experience of other reviewers, and I can't. I think the horses are great, but if you don't see horses (and of course there is no guarantee), there isn't much else there. Carrot Island is just sand, shrubby...More

We had a great day, saw about 20 wild horses in the marsh along with lots of sea birds and crabs. The water was low so we got out of the boats to get closer to the horses. It was a little too much paddling...More
