My teens were a bit bored but were good sports about it because I was interested. It is free (donation recommended), otherwise my rating would have been lower. I enjoyed seeing the sperm whale skeleton and talking to the archeologists working on the Blackbeard excavation.

This museum has priceless artifacts from the pirate era that are extremely well presented. This should be a must stop in Beaufort and well worth an hour or two. Amazingly it is also free.

It's a small indoor museum, I did not see any dogs when we were there. I'm thinking it would not be appropriate to bring dogs in.
