The Jungle Place is a licensed sanctuary for the endangered Spider Monkey....

The Jungle Place is a licensed sanctuary for the endangered Spider Monkey. They rescue and rehabilitate orphaned monkeys who were victims of the illegal pet trade, poaching, habitat destruction and exploitation. All too often these beautiful, highly intelligent primates become victims when humans and nature collide in a natural paradise like The Riviera Maya. The in-person tours they offer to help support the sanctuary are the very definition of sustainable and ecologically responsible tourism. The owners, Heidi and Joel, are a wonderful couple who originally moved to the area to retire but instead devoted their lives to care for these rescued monkeys. They provide them with an incredible amount of love, individual attention, medical care and specialized diets, all within a beautiful and meticulously well-kept habitat right in their native jungle.Visit in-person to meet the owners and the monkeys, view the facilities and habitat, and see first-hand the level of care that your donation helps provide. Be sure to reserve your tour well in advance, as they allow only a very limited number of visits per week.

Amazing, amazing experience. This was our third trip to Mexico and was the highlight of our trip. Heidi and Joel are doing amazing work with the 80+ spider monkeys they have adopted. This is truly an unforgettable experience and we will definitely make visiting The Jungle Place a must each time we are in Riviera Maya.

This tour was once in a lifetime. Awesome. Yes, it is difficult to book and get too, but 2 groups of four twice a week get to go ONLY. This ensures the monkeys are not an act. They would never let us in there if they didn't need money to feed the animals, they are not living in opulence, believe... More

My wife and I visited The Jungle Place during our two weeks stay in the Mayan. This was our fourth visit to see Heidi, Joel and the close to 90 spyder monkeys that they care for. This is a definite must-see for anyone going to the Mayan. Book your reservations on line on The Jungle Place website. This is a... More

My family and I visited on November 28th and it was truly an amazing experience. I appreciate the non-commercialized feel (12 in our group) and the ongoing commitment to truly caring for these monkeys. Heidi and Joel patiently answered everyone's questions and made everyone feel welcome. My two daughters (10 and 12) have not stopped talking about this experience. The... More

We loved our experience at The Jungle Place! My husband planned this excursion as part of our honeymoon in Mexico, because he knows how much I love monkeys. We rode the collectivo to Chemuyil, and then took a taxi to the sanctuary. We had a wonderful time! The monkeys jump and climb all over you in a contained space as... More

Wonderful once in a life time...well twice for us...experience! Loved our second visit as much as the first. Don't take my word for it...read the reviews. Email them for a scheduled visit. No walk ins. May take a few emails to get a response but you will hear back. Keep trying. As mentioned in other reviews- no sun screen, or... More

This was an amazing addition to our trip to Mexico which we would recommend highly. The sanctuary is around a 30 minute drive from Playa del Carmen (costs around 700 pesos in a cab, one way) and is home to around 80 spider monkeys, all of whom have been rescued from the illegal pet trade, orphaned through poaching, or displaced... The Jungle Place Spider Monkey Sanctuary was one of my best memories of my trip to the Yucatan Peninsula. Heidi and Joel are so compassionate about the work they do and it was an experience I will soon not forget. Please if you are going to this part of Mexico book a visit, the monkey's need you. To sit with... More
