Nothing really interesting about them at all. Unfortunately, the pink lakes were not pink but did have a ton of rotten, red seaweed along the edges that smelled absolutely awful.
No quokkas around them. We pedaled as fast as we could to get away from them because of the smell and flies. Maybe it is better during a wetter season?

We took a shortcut to the Rottnest Island Salt Lakes. We wanted to see the Pink Lake. After biking for a long time, we found it!
At first the Pink Lake did not look pink, but nearby there was red surrounding the lake.
As I kept on looking, I could see that the pinl Kale was lightly pink. We have to look form a certain perspective.
This Pink Lake and other lakes nearby have lots of sand. This is what we makes it attractive!
P.S. At times the lake is really link. No one knows why.

Fantastic to explore by bike and learn why the lakes are pink. Due to high salt content and bacteria. Great bird life around the lakes

It's nice to look at the lakes, but more interesting if you read about them before you go. Find out about the stromatolites, which resemble some of the oldest lifeforms on Earth. I tried to find them but it had rained recently and the water levels were too high. Ask at the visitor's centre before you trek out to the lakes.

I went to Rottnest Island during Xmas week and there were a lot of local and foreign tourists flocking to the island. Wanted to take a train ride to tour the island but was fully booked for the day. I'm not really good at cycling and decided to walk instead around the island to enjoy the view. There are total of 9 salt lakes in the island...it was summer and the wind was very strong and cool. No smelly odour as reported here before. The view was great and it was such a peaceful walk for me in between the lakes. I even tasted the salty foam and it was yummy..hahaha.

We had lived for 6 years in Perth many years ago but we couldn't afford to go there in those days. Now it's over 40 years later & we returned to see Perth & to visit Rottnest with my sons,D in Law & 2 grandchidren 10 & 12. We had limited time so could only stay there for the day. I had bought all the tickets online - cost about $450 for us all including ferry. flippers n masks for 3 & on/off bus. Took about 30/40 min to get there from Fremantle. Plenty of all day Parking at the wharf- just need to drive around a bit to find it & only a 5 min walk to boarding area. They had areas for loading bikes.luggage etc. Loading took probably a good 20 mins. You must have tickets with barcode ready for checking. Seating is required for all. Toilets & some food available on ferry. We all found it very cold going to the Island. They said they keep it cool to reduce risk of nausea etc. There's a long jetty once you disembark. They have stops on the jetty where you can collect pre-booked bikes, scuba gear etc. If you don't want to cart your gear around there are lockers for hire on the right side as you step on to land with toilets in same place. Lockers cost less than $10 all day. There are plenty of eating areas within a 5-10min walk. with birds everywhere- hold on to your food at the tables or it will quickly be taken by the birds. There is a very well stocked General store with gates to keep the quokkas out. We used the on/off bus which let us see enough to keep the children happy. It was a lovely warm day for our visit in April17 but in winter be sure to rug up as it gets so windy that some trees grow parallel to the ground & the temp really drops they say. We got off at the lighthouse but to go to the top with guide does cost. There are toilets there too.The quokkas are timid & friendly& can be patted. We had 1 which was obviously thirsty as it drank about half a cup of water from a disposable container which delighted the kids. If you wanted to do swimming & scuba diving I re ckon you'd need to stay more than 1 day & there's plenty of accommodation @ varying costs. It's a lovely quiet place to chill out.

Rottnest Island has 12 of these beautiful lakes, 5 large ones and 7 smaller. Some are near Thomsons Bay, just past the Rottnest Lodge, walk a little further, climb Vlamings Lookout and you will have a fabulous view of them. If you have a bike, hop on it, make sure you have water, and head out between Herschel and Pearse Lakes. This is a causeway built by the aboriginal prisoners when Rottnest was a jail, it's a wonderful feeling riding between these 2 lakes, with the foam blowing across the road. Sometimes these lakes get quite pink, which is algae, the foam is algea decomposing, the wind blows and it is transformed into foam. Another ride I love is along Defense Road, opposite the Oliver Hill turnoff. This unobtrusive road is the most relaxing and soothing road on the island. Stop at the picnic table, and the quokkas will come, but only feed them natural food or their little tummies get very upset.

A great way to see the lakes and the bird life on the way to the gun emplacements. That was also a great tour run by great volunteers ..

My friend is in a wheelchair. Are there any paths to salt lakes that are wheelchair friendly? We are taking the hop on hop off bus. Which stop should we alight? Thank you.
