visiting here was a highlight of our trip to saint-emilion, which we did right before we left. it's lovely you go to the tourist office and they give you a key to let yourself in. (you have to give ID to them which you get back when you return the key)
the climb up isn't actually bad at all but even if it was, the view is SO worth it. i'm glad we chose to climb this instead of tour de roy as you can see in my photos the view from here seems to be much better. it dwarves the tour de roy! :P

Hello ve55el
Thank you for your visit and your review.
The view of the 2 towers is not comparable: at the top of the Tour du Roy, you fly over the village of Saint-Emilion and appreciate its architecture whereas at the top of the Bell Tower, you have eyes only for the surrounding vineyards. It is very different.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Grand Saint-Emilionnais.

Lovely clock tower that is one you can climb if you are so inclined. For many people, that is the highpoint, but not so much for us. This is a small town with other sights to see close up as opposed to the overview. That being said, this is a nice stop.

Hello 1234texas,
Thank you for your feedback.
We hope that the memory of the landscape which was offered to you from the top of the bell-tower will have marked positively your spirit.
With the pleasure of seeing you again in Saint-Emilion.

How fun to be given the keys to the tower! We unlocked the door and climbed up the tower, stopping at each level to enjoy the breathtaking views of St. Emilion. An easy climb with many stops along the way to take a break and enjoy the sights.
It is also beautiful to see at night when the tower is illuminated. To us, it was the symbol of St. Emilion.

One of the wonders of the region, the bell tower sparkles at night and a photo from there is unforgettable. Not to miss!

Again, spare some time to visit the Clocher. It does not take much time, but it's worth the ticket. The city is small, so you can walk from one attraction to the other.

Fantastic 360° views over Saint-Emilion from the highest point in town. It's a steep climb up the narrow staircase, but well worth it.
Bring a jacket, as it gets quite windy up top.
The key to the entrance can be collected at the tourist office.

Everyone gathers there to look over the ledge down on the marche below. A good view even without going up the tower. This tower is so heavy, metal braces have been added underground to supports I. The largest underground church in Europe.

Pay €2 per person at the Tourisim Office and get a key for the bell tower (you need to leave an ID card to make sure you bring it back!) as well as card telling you about the tower and what you can see. Cross the square, let yourself in and start climbing. Approx 200 steps, with three floors (plus the bell) to stop at and take in the breathtaking views across St Emilion and neighbouring areas. It's well worth the effort and you'll get some incredible photos. One small tip....take some tissues or wipes, There are a lot of birds living at the top and they may just leave you a message :)

These are the types of things that make me love Europe, you just can't find this sort of thing in the US. We think old is 100 years, there it's 1000 years.

There is a small charge for entering the Clocher and making the climb up the narrow steps. Every step is worth the effort. Once at the top you can spy the streets you have walked or discover new places you want to explore in the village. Highly recommended.
