The church itself was something very special, cut out from the limestone rock in the eight century. Great tour, about an hour long. Would absolutely recomend it to anyone interested in history and architecture! You buy tickets at the tourist center.Dear Janni72, Thank you for visiting and sharing your experience. - MaltruenoCroydon, United Kingdom295 contributionsThe highlight of a St.Emilion visitThe moment we arrived at the village we went straight to the tourist office and managed to book the last English tour of the day for free with our Bordeaux city pass. This was a gamble as there was no guarantee we would find places but it worked fortunately. These tours are very popular so if you want a guaranteed place prepaying/prebooking for places on the tourist office website is recommended. The tour itself takes you first to the hermitage of St.Emilion and then to the catacombs and the underground church. The tour guide was very good and funny. She explained to us who St.Emilion was and his connection to the village, who was allowed to be buried in the catacombs and finally a few words about the church. I have to admit that the last part seemed to be rather rushed. The church is quite big and we were shown just a part of it. This could be because it was the last tour of the day, so again my suggestion is to get on the earlier tours if possible.Dear Marios, Thank you for visiting and sharing your experience. - sinza2017Orange, France452 contributionsLarge church all undergroundThis was an incredible visit. You must sign up for the tour; otherwise you don’t get entry to the Underground caves and church. Meeting point is at the Place De l’église Monolithe and be on time. Plan time for finding parking as the tour starts on time, enters the underground sections quickly, and if you’re not on time you lose your entry with no reimbursement. That said, this was much like being in northern Ethiopia and its rock hewn churches….and yet one is in Europe. Almost same time in history. Amazing…and this was in St Émilion before the wine tasting and in fact was a stop on the Way of St James pilgrimage. (Parking is not difficult to find in St. Emilion before 10:30 in the morning. So, book a 11:00 tour!)Dear Sinza2017, Thank you again for visiting and sharing your experience. - Mary CBristol, United Kingdom13 contributionsMust do experienceThis is an absolutely world class site. The tour (must book in advance, strongly recommend booking on saint emilion tourist office website in advance but can visit the physical tourist office) allows you to see Saint Emilions underground hermits cell, the catacombs, the church and Chapel. The wonderfully well preserved 14th century paintings in the Chapel are amazing - it really is like stepping back into the past. We took the French tour in the morning so we could have a leisurely lunch- you can stop off via the tourist office to get a translation card in advance, but our wonderful guide Julia was conscious there were some non native speakers on the tour and spoke very clearly indeed and was funny, informative and engaging. If you've reasonable but non fluent French you will still understand the vast majority of the tour if you make it known its not your first language due to the excellent delivery, otherwise get a translation card or go on the afternoon tour in english, but do go, it is a unique experience and quite moving.Bonjour madward83, Quel avis ! un grand merci de la part de toute l'équipe de l'Office de Tourisme. While I understand that I am in France, when a website states that the languages offered are in English, French and Spanish, and that also a written translation is available, I would expect to have some information provided as promised. Not only did the guide not have written translation in English available (the 2 Spanish-speaking guests were provided with a Spanish translation), the guide stated she would provide at least some information in English and Spanish, this did not happen in a meaningful way. For example, in one room she gave a 15 min talk in French and the ONLY sentence she spoke in English or Spanish, was to point to a blocked up entrance telling us it was the original entrance. That was literally all that was said. Every other room we went to was the same.
Again - I understand I am in France. However, to pay 30 Euros on the understanding from the website that the languages also include English and Spanish and also that written translations would be provided, is not right. So please be aware that unless you speak French, you will get nothing from this hour long tour. And the guide, on the few occasions she did speak, was well versed in English and clearly just chose not to accommodate any non-French speaking guests. Again - that’s fine - but this should be clear when booking and paying for tickets.

Dear lesleycH8644YN,
We are very sorry to read that you had a bad experience yesterday during our Saint-Emilion Souterrains tour, however we really thank you for your feedback because it is our only concern to pay attention to our visitors and improve to our best when it is possible.
Yesterday, you took a tour in French; it is unfortunate that there was no more translation support at the Emilion’s cave. As written in our website, and as you highlighted it, a paper translation is indeed available in several languages (German, English, Chinese, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian and Ukrainian) on request at the tourist office before the tour. We would have been very pleased to provide you with one if you had asked at the Tourist Office before the beginning of the tour.
The written translations in the cave of Emilion are there only to help visitors who forget to ask for translations at the tourist office, but sometimes visitors also forget to return them, so that there is no more available. We are very sorry for the inconvenience.
It is true we offer tours in French, English, and Spanish, however, tours are not bilingual. The guide tried her best, although the tour was in French. There is an English guided-tour every day at 2pm, and we would be more than happy to book it for you on your next visit.
We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your discovery of the Grand Saint-Emilionnais and that you will keep an excellent memory of it.
Best regards,

Not only does little Saint-Emilion have 7 Michelin-starred restaurants, but it also has the largest underground church in Europe. It is easy to find it by the 53-meter bell tower visible from everywhere in Saint-Emilion. Arriving at the Market Square, you will not see at all that the church is underground. It seems that the wall of the church is in front of us, but this is an illusion. In fact, we see a hill in which a church is hollowed out. The topology of the church imposed restrictions, so it was not possible to traditionally locate the entrance, the apse to the cardinal points. Perhaps you have already met similar underground churches in Cappadocia. This church was inspired by a visit to one of the churches in Cappadocia. But it all began in the eighth century with the burial of a hermit monk, who gave the name to the whole city. After 4 centuries, a bell tower was erected. The revolution led to the death of the interior and therefore the church cannot boast of a rich interior. Yes, it's hard to get in...

The tour was fascinating! Our guide was generous, offering many English translations even though the tour we booked at the tourism office was supposed to be all in French. The catacombs and church are fascinating and I felt transported and immersed in a different time, especially as I couldn’t filter anything through the lens of a camera. There was a stark reality to the dark tombs, beautiful ancient frescoes and the vast cavern of a church excavated from the solid limestone.

Its roots date back to the 11th century, carved into/out of the rock. It unsurprisingly is dedicated to St Emilion. Its exterior looks unorthodox, likely consistent with the reality of its construction of the church and alterations over the centuries.

Our tour was in English, arranged through the tourist information office in St. Emilion. We booked it in person, however, not via the internet. Their tourism office has a site in English that TripAdvisor rules prohibit me from posting. Google is your friend, however.
