We took a guided day tour from Quito and it costs $50 each (incl. bus, breakfast, lunch, and bike rental). The experience was surreal. We were sort of lucky with weather. Due to high attitude (we just came back to Quito the night before around 10pm from Amazon jungle tour where it is about 200m above sea-level), we expected the... More

Climbing an active volcano is a totally magical and exhilarating experience!! A physical high!! We are mid-way through our 10-day Ecuador trip as I'm writing this review, I already know this would be the highlight of our trip! We had a highly knowledgeable and capable guide Frank who very patiently helped us deal with our altitude sickness issue (since we... More

On the way from Quilotoa to Quito we stopped in Cotopaxi national park. The snow covered peak was barely visible, but we took a chance and hire the guide and went as high as we could (4500 m). Unfortunately by the time we got there it was all in shroud of clouds. I walked up little-bit but visibility was about... More

It is a protected area in Ecuador situated in the Cotopaxi Province, Napo Province and Pichincha Province, roughly 50 km south of Quito. The Cotopaxi volcano (supposedly meaning smooth neck of the moon) that lends its name to the park is located within its boundaries, together with two others: the dormant Rumiñawi volcano to its north-west and the historical Sincholagua... The altitude is so high that for people with respiratory issues (me) or heart issues it's not recommended that you go to the top of the summit. The views are great and there are numerous lower level hikes one can take. There are wild horses and cows and wildlife everywhere. The drive is great. The volcano commands respect. It's worth... we did this excursion on our own. Thanks to tripadvisor and some other blogs it was really easy and I can only encourage others to do it like we did. Tour operators charge for 2 people from 80-110 USD for exactly the same tour. Take a bus from terminal terreste in Latacunga in the direction of quito (every 10 mins... More

I was in Cotopaxi National Park last December, and at the time it was active so it was not allowed to climb. Luckily it was allowed at the time to get as close to it as possible, which is almost at the base of it. Visiting the lake nearby is nice too, but it cannot be put to words how... More

This was my first trip to S. America. We flew in to Quito (elev. 9,350 ft.) to the clapping of people on the plane upon landing. (Surrounded by high mountains, it's a dangerous landing.) Our "base camp" to climb Ecuadorian mtns., Cotopaxi included was Hotel Majestic. During our first attempt to climb Cotopaxi, we decided to climb a "new route"... More

Make sure you are ready for the altitude! We had spent 3 days in Quito acclimating and we still struggled (although we are not avid hikers either). Our guide Henri was just wonderful! He told us lots of interest things about the plant life in the area and we really enjoyed the hike with him!
