Had read lots of wonderful things about this shop’s amazing upstairs here, NYT, elsewhere, but while the back rooms were cheek by jowl with an jumble of very cool (and some very beautiful) antiques including paper ephemera, jewelry, lamps, and more, we were denied access to the upstairs when we politely asked. So be prepared for that possibility and sound serious about buying furniture if you go? Good luck and hope others have a better experience.

This shop is hands down one of the most amazing places for antique finds in the world and has some real treasures that you won’t find anywhere else. Expect to spend hours browsing but don’t expect a warm welcome or customer service of any kind because you won’t get it. The owner lives up to the reputation and then some. The prices are extortionate but it’s good fun having a look at least so definitely visit.

At first this looks like a tourist T-shirt shop...but keep going to the back area where you will find room after room of antiques and curious finds. There are several floors going up and each room is stuffed to the rafters. There is something for everyone. I spent 2 hours here and one of the owners was kind enough to assist me an explain a few details. I spend $200 on a few great collectibles and had a plane to catch, otherwise I'd have been here half the day.

If you have any interest in old stuff, head here. Walk right through the front room stocked with tacky souvenirs to the two back rooms overflowing from floor to ceiling with "treasures" -- ranging from old junk to true antiques. Then once you think you have seen all on offer, ask to be taken upstairs where there is an entire floor of more stuff. And once you have seen all that, go up another flight to yet another full floor of stuff. Hint: the better and bigger treasures are upstairs. Try not to be overwhelmed. I was looking for a carved wooden box and saw nothing I liked downstairs; upstairs there were piles to choose from. The shop is run by a pair of brothers. Murtaza is the chattier, better-known one, but Asif, who mans the front desk and is often busy with their wholesale business, is perfectly friendly and helpful.

What a treasure in the heart of Stonetown. I wish I had a week to go through all the antiquities and rare finds. Would go back to Zanzibar JUST for this shop !

Place packed with everything. Go to the second floor and see some of the items from years gone by. They also have other warehouses for even more treasures.

Where to begin! Visiting the curio shop is the highlight of any trip to Zanzibar, and I always come away with something special and unique, whether an antique Zanzibar chest or door, a beautiful old clock, or just a small bronze trinket that I’ve been looking for. If you’re not too constrained by the space you have in your luggage, ask to see the warehouses which are full of amazing finds from Zanzibar, Africa and beyond. Murtaza and Asif are simply wonderful at explaining what things are and where they come from, and are happy to arrange delivery to Dar (or beyond). Don’t miss it!

I’ve been visiting Zanzibar and Murtaza for many years and always need to be forcibly dragged out of the shop! He has an amazing range of items, and knows the provenance of everything. He’s super friendly and hospitable. If you’re interested in a bigger item ask him to show you the warehouses around town! I recommend Murtaza to everyone who visits for an authentic Zanzibari souvenir to suit any budget.

Great shop but way overpriced.
A simple beer tanker that cost 2 dollars in Australia started at 60,000 shillings = 30 dollars Australian. He was willing to come down to 25 . No idea of value.

Based on checking out info on TA before our trip to Stone Town - we asked our city guide Kamis to arrange a stop at this place...

Not as great as I had hoped - I REALLY fell in love with the nearby Abeid Curio Shop on nearby Cathedral Srett - but we picked up some T-shirts and a few other interesting items at ZCS.

The rooms seem to keep going on and on deeper into the building - and you never know what you may find - reminded me of an antique store in the USA - but with more unusual items...

The lady working in the shop was friendly and helpful with finding T-shirts in the correct size - the gentleman transacting our purchases - was on the phone talking and distracted and grouchy (some things are the same the world around!)
