Beautiful Building
Sep 2020 • Solo
I got a chance to visit this beautiful historic building but there were no live performances currently due to COVID-19 but I got a chance to tour the building. There were several performers practicing and classes going on at the time. Wonder building and staff.

Long life to Zanzibar Music

Need to be supported. A great School, a réal human project. We met incredible people there. We saw 3 concerts by DCMA in Stone Town and Jambiani.
A must do and see in Zanzibar.
Don't hesitate to make a donation to support them

Immerse yourself deep into the roots of Zanzibar's culture
Jun 2019 • Solo
Inside the beautiful building, in the patio, you will get to enjoy live music every night by 8pm.
Local young professional musicians will create a magic atmosphere were you will navigate, dance and feel Zanzibar's rhythms and melodies.

By enjoying this gigs in Stone Town you are actually supporting the NGO that runs this project: empowering youth through music in Zanzibar.

Personally, meeting the musicians was the best piece of my time in this island.

hugs!

Exceptional place bursting with creativity, a must visit for those interested in music. Regular concerts on the top floor. High standard. We went to 2 concerts, Taraab and Swahili music, both were highlights of our trip. Love!

Wonderful
Dec 2018 • Solo
I had a lovely evening at one of their concerts. All the musicians are amazing at what they do. They try hard to engage the audience, and they succeeded in putting all in a good mood. When I enquired about drumming classes I read about in other reviews, the person I asked had no clue...I wish it were easier to get that sort of info.

Highlight of our stay in Stonetown
Nov 2018 • Couples
Dhow Countries Music Academy was a highlight of our visit to Stonetown. We took a drumming class one day and had a blast learning from a master. Another day we went to an evening concert ($5) and enjoyed watching, listening and eventually dancing to students playing and singing a myriad of instruments with enthusiasm and joy. I would recommend checking in with the Academy to find the concert night and plan your trip accordingly as it is a local attraction not to be missed.

Brill!!

I'd been hunting around online for courses/workshops in Stone Town for somethimg less conventionally touristy to do, and I came upon the traditional drumming workshop here. OMG it was so much fun! I wish I'd recorded it. Super smiley Harry beat out patterns for us to copy and combine. His English was limited, so it was all watch, listen and repeat/'do along with me'. It made for an hour and a half mix of laser focus, ruthless competition between me and my boyfriend to see who could get a passage correct first for bragging rights, and hosing ourselves laughing at how rubbish we were (and we're both pretty musical/have played instruments in past!). Harry repeatedly kindly telling us 'Listen, it's simple'
and then slowing patterns to a crawl that we'd still sometimes screw up just added to the giggles.

Honestly, have a go. It's a wicked laugh and not something your mates will have ever done.

Traditional Drumming Workshop
Sep 2018
My friend and I signed up for a traditional drumming workshop at the Dhow Countries Music Academy and it was a highlight of our visit to Zanzibar. We were the only two there, so it was basically a private lesson. Harry, the instructor, is an excellent teacher and so joyful. If we had more time, we would have booked a second session.

Very entertaining
Sep 2018 • Couples
My hubby and I were enticed in by a guy handing out fliers. We had no idea what to expect, but it turned out to be really fun. The musicians also did some great dancing and they had the happiest drummer alive! I'm so glad we went.
