We took part on a private walking tour in the Stone Town which is on the World Heritage list. We visited this Cathedral, too. The building is impressive both outside and inside but it has a very sad history. It’s located on the place of former old slave market. In the garden we saw a schocking stone monument of slaves.

A very, very sad reminder… for us to respect, be generous of thought and action to our fellow human beings.
It costs $5 per person to enter and a well-informed guide gives one a personal tour of the cathedral, it’s gardens and the memorials to the sad history of the slave trade.

Built over the slave market remarkable architecture. Some columns were put in upside down when the architect was away and guides will point them out. Livingston funeral and the Livingstone cross mad from wood of the tree he was buried beneath. Striking to see the preserved portion of the slave market under the church.

The Church was built on the site where they were selling slaves.
The slave trade was abolished by Dr. Livingstone

Beautiful cathedral built with coral stones. Next to the old slave market museum. Entry is free part of the ticket purchased to enter the museum.

I was here on Easter Sunday and it was great that there was an English language Holy Communion in the side chapel. The Swahili language service was taking place in the main part of the cathedral and was well attended.
It was so sad to see the memorial to the slave trade just next door and to know what terrible suffering took place there.

We visited here after visiting the slave market, our mood was somber. Our guide explained all about the history of the church which I will not spoil for you because it is really interesting. It is beautiful in a simplistic way but the history in here is so complex.

I am so glad that we were able to make it to the church...it was a wonderful site to see. The ground keepers do a wonderful job with the upkeep of this church.
