A must visit and an important part of history world history
Jan 2020
We visited here after visiting the slave market, our mood was somber. Our guide explained all about the history of the church which I will not spoil for you because it is really interesting. It is beautiful in a simplistic way but the history in here is so complex.

I am so glad that we were able to make it to the church...it was a wonderful site to see. The ground keepers do a wonderful job with the upkeep of this church.

It is very interesting to visit the Cathedral and learn the history of colonialism in Zanzibar. The church is quite architecturally interesting and rather beautiful. It was built to sanctify the place of the former slave market. The building succeeds in this effort while also drawing attention to the horrors of the past

A Must See

Don't miss the story of the slave trade. It will break your heart. There is a small fee - but the displays are very well done.

Christ Church Cathedral - a must visit
Aug 2019
The Cathedral is beautiful, although not an architectural masterpiece, but it plays an important role in Zanzibar's history. In my view, a must visit if you want to know a little more about the history of slavery.

Mr Livingston I presume?
Oct 2019
There are many wonderful stories in this church. The remnat of the slave whipping post. The original burial place for Mr. Livingston. The pillars in the rear that were put in upside down due to the fact that the bishop had gone home and the men put them in upside down.

Worth a visit
Oct 2019
We attended a service in this beautiful church then visited the slavery exhibition. This is a must as the cathedral is built on the site of the slave market. There was a final reminder that modern day slavery still exists for millions of people. Very well done exhibition.

A Christian Cathedral of traditional coral stone construction
May 2019
The Cathedral, dating back to the 1870's, was constructed of predominantly of coral stone on the site of the biggest slave market in Zanzibar, with the alter supposedly built where the main whipping post used to be located. One window to the right of the entrance is dedicated to Livingstone and a timber cross was constructed from a tree taken from the location where his heart was buried in Zambia, before his body was returned to England.
