About
Dicovering the Morne Brabant - The slave route The Morne Brabant is a mountain of the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of the Morne. Declared World Heritage by UNESCO since July 6, 2008, the site is a sanctuary for runaway slaves and is a strong cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. Being on private land, Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It includes a multitude of endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutonania, and its red flaming flower. The hike to the summit of Morne Brabant lasts between three and four hours, depending on the homogeneity of the group. Once on top, we discover the breathtaking panoramic views on the west and south-west lagoons and part of of the island.

Well worth the climb. Great views from the top.
We hiked upto the iron cross on Le Morne. Prakash was our guide and he was fantastic. He explained the history of the mountain and it's place in local culture as well as giving us plenty of insights into the local plants etc. He met us promptly and was very helpful during the trickier parts of the climb, especially my 11yr old son when coming back down. It was tiring but Prakash took us to a local cafe for refreshments after which was great. Thanks Prakash... 👍 This was well worth the climb when we reached the top. I thoroughly recommend a guide as there are several routes to the top.

    Amazing and fun
Great hike, you need a level of fitness but with a great attitude you will be fine. Take sugary snacks and plenty of water, we did it in under 3 hours but can take up to 6 if you dilly dally! It’s got more rock climbing and no safety equipment but perfectly safe if you aren’t a doughnut. If it were advertised as it actually is we never would have done it but it is such a great laugh and experience and would do it again.

    Sad History
A large basaltic monolith that rises 556m above sea level that commands your attention as you approach Le Morne. It sits on the south western tip of Mauritius and was declared a world heritage site in 2008. I didn't attempt to climb it but am assured that the view is spectacular! Back in the 18th & early 19th Century it was used as a refuge and shelter for escaped slaves and sadly, even after slavery was abolished , it was the scene of many deaths by suicide. Today it is a peaceful site and well trekked by visitors.

    Relatively simple climb
I did a solo climb in mid July 2023. For me it was a fairly easy climb. It took me around 1 hour and 15 minutes to ascend and around 45 minutes to descend. I was at the gate at around 8:00am and it was shut. So went through the fence. You don’t necessary need a guide to climb. It’s just one route up the mountain. If you’r going with a family and have members who are a little elderly or young, then you may want to use the services of a guide. The scramble is a little steep, but it’s a fun climb. When climbing the scramble, don’t enter the gully on the right, but climb on the high ground on the left. As anyone descending from above will shake loose some rocks which bounce down the gully. Try and climb earlier in the day while it’s cooler.

Le Morne Hike with Prakash - Green Discovery
Excellent hike with Prakash from Green Discovery! Great views and he helped to take photos and videos. He even got our breakfast so that we can start early. He is a qualified guide, well prepared and very knowledgeable. The previous day we hit some road closures with google maps but he helped us to find the right roads. He is available on whatsapp +23057608367 and very responsive. We stayed at his place, great view of 7 cascade falls, sunset. Food was fantastic.

    Good experience
the view was exceptional...a bit hard the last part. I suggest if you go in group to take a 20 metre rope it will come handy. also the cross at the top need to be repaired since one arm is missing. didn't like people standing on the cross for photos. some respect should be observed

    Unexpected fun climb
Along the shoreside, a peak arises from the water. A hike of about 40 minutes brings you to a stunning view of the surrounding bay for everyone to enjoy... If however you like a little more adventure after the 40 minute hike there's the possibility to climb the full mountain. The hike+ has you climb rapidly with hands and feet. Not for the faint hearted or people who like to take the elevator to the second floor.

Le Morne Brabant is a tough but very rewarding hike. The view at the top is just incredible. I highly recommend to use a guide: one for safety purpose but also to learn more about the environment and the story of the site.
I contacted Daryeau from Daryeau adventure (‪+230 5496 5720‬). He is very experienced, care for your safety and also has a great knowledge of the local environment (plants and animals) as well as the history of the area.
I highly recommend him and would definitely use his services if I get the chance to come again to Mauritius.

Le Morne Brabant is not just a mountain; it's a monument to history, a testament to nature's artistry, and a sanctuary for adventure seekers. Rising dramatically from the southwestern coast of Mauritius, this iconic basaltic monolith stands at 556 meters (1,824 feet) above sea level, casting its imposing silhouette against the azure sky.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Le Morne Brabant holds deep cultural significance. It served as a refuge for runaway slaves in the 18th and early 19th centuries, a place where they sought freedom and safety. The mountain's rugged cliffs and isolated location made it an ideal hideout, but also a poignant symbol of resistance and resilience in the face of oppression.

Today, Le Morne Brabant is a mecca for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and history buffs alike. The ascent to its summit is not for the faint of heart, but the rewards are plentiful for those who dare to venture upward. Along the way, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, lush greenery, and the surrounding coastline, offering a glimpse into Mauritius' natural splendor.

The hike itself is a test of endurance and agility, with steep inclines, rocky terrain, and narrow pathways. However, each step brings you closer to the summit and a sense of accomplishment that is unmatched. The final stretch, a vertical climb aided by ropes, adds an exhilarating element to the adventure, culminating in a triumphant arrival at the peak.

From the summit of Le Morne Brabant, the panorama is nothing short of spectacular. The vast expanse of the ocean stretches out before you, merging seamlessly with the sky in an endless horizon. Below, the coastline is dotted with pristine beaches, swaying palm trees, and vibrant coral reefs, painting a picture of paradise that is truly awe-inspiring.

But beyond its natural beauty, Le Morne Brabant carries with it a profound sense of history and heritage. Standing atop this ancient landmark, one cannot help but feel a connection to the past and a reverence for the struggles of those who came before. It is a place of reflection, contemplation, and remembrance, where the echoes of the past reverberate through the ages.

In conclusion, a visit to Le Morne Brabant is an experience like no other. Whether you come for the adventure, the scenery, or the history, you will leave with a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Mauritius and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a place where nature and culture converge, leaving an indelible mark on all who have the privilege to explore its slopes.

We had a great experience hiking to the top of Le Morne. Our guide Daryeau was really experienced and made the trip to the top smooth. His passion and knowledge for the local environment was inspiring and we learned a lot from his interesting stories about plants and animals, as well as the history of the area. We started the hike at 6.30, which was nice as we could see the sunrise and reached the top before the rush of tourists. I can highly recommend to reach out to Daryeau from Daryeau adventure (‪+230 5496 5720‬) and to hike to the top of Le Morne together with him

Not an easy hike but what a wonderful experience! The only way to do it is with the guide Prakash from Greendiscovery. You can contact him on WhatsApp +230 57608367. He’s a certified, professional guide and also a beautiful human being. As we hiked he also told us stories about Mauritius, the history behind Le Morne, and we just had a real good time! Two days later I went for a Tamarin falls tour with him as well.
Highly recommend

Best hike ever. I must warn everyone that this hike can be challenging for some people!

Daryeau, our tour guide, was great and very helpful. He has a lot of knowledge of the mountain, plants, trees and of course hiking. I felt safe having him by our sides.

We ran out of water and he was kind enough to share his with us!!

I advise to use mosquito repellent before you leave the car.

The views were breakfasting, one of the most beautiful views I've seen!
