. Dicovering the Morne Brabant - The slave route The Morne Brabant is a mountain of the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of the Morne. Declared World Heritage by UNESCO since July 6, 2008, the site is a sanctuary for runaway slaves and is a strong cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. Being on private land, Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It includes a multitude of endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutonania, and its red flaming flower. The hike to the summit of Morne Brabant lasts between three and four hours, depending on the homogeneity of the group. Once on top, we discover the breathtaking panoramic views on the west and south-west lagoons and part of of the island.

I've been visiting Mauritius since I was a kid and I got to experience Le Morne Brabant for the very first time this year. The hike is long and can be a bit difficult for those who are not used to do this kind of exercise. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is not a sporty or afraid of... More

We also went with Allan who was recommended by the Lux. Both of us are 58 years old and were the oldest on the hike. There is a lot of scrambling on this hike, viz. using all 4's to climb rock and coming down using all 4's to decrease danger of sliding. Allan is a proud and excellent guide sharing... More

There is a great new hiking track up the Le Morne mountain which offers amazing views of the South-Western part of the island. Worth the sweat!

It's a fairly hard going walk. I was really sweating! But it was fun and the views were stunning. We did the walk with Yanature who have the rights to take you up to the top (there's a locked gate so most independent walkers can only go half way up, I think). They were very good and I recommend them.... More

Start early in the morning for a trek, and try to go with a local guide. Takes around 2-3 hours of hiking, but it's all worth it for the views. Take 1 liter of water per head.

We spent a morning climbing the first half of Le Morne. It took us a bit of time to find the path which leads up the mountain but once found it was quite straight forward. The first half of the climb is basically a hike. Took us about an hour to reach the mid point where the gate is. We... More

This is NOT a climb but a hard walk, and one has to be reasonably fit to do it. There is a wide track to follow with a little bit of hard work at the end where you will find ropes to help you up the rocky incline. There are lovely views as you get nearer to the top and... More

My husband and I climbed the mountain with a guide called Allan, he was so passionate about the history behind it, and you could tell he really loved his job. We climbed the mountain the day before our wedding and everyone thought we were crazy. I think they were right, it was very hard work. We set off from our... More
