About
Dicovering the Morne Brabant - The slave route The Morne Brabant is a mountain of the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of the Morne. Declared World Heritage by UNESCO since July 6, 2008, the site is a sanctuary for runaway slaves and is a strong cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. Being on private land, Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It includes a multitude of endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutonania, and its red flaming flower. The hike to the summit of Morne Brabant lasts between three and four hours, depending on the homogeneity of the group. Once on top, we discover the breathtaking panoramic views on the west and south-west lagoons and part of of the island.

Another brilliant hike with Prakash of Green Discovery. We went to Le Morne Brabant and hiked/climbed right to the top. This was a challenging climb for me - started off with an uphill hike up paths. The next half involved a lot of ‘climbing’ up steep sections of rock and Prakash was there every step of the way to help when needed. We had incredible views the whole way up and it was so rewarding to reach the summit. Afterwards we had a visit to Le Morne beach which is absolutely stunning and cooled off with a swim. Thanks so much to Prakash for 2 amazing experiences ( we also hiked Tamarin Falls another day ) - best days of our holiday. Recommend booking any tour with Prakash - he was great company and invaluable support. He was also very helpful to other climbers, he even offered to assist a Mum and daughter we came across who had decided not to go further. To book WhatsApp +230 5760 8367

It was one of the best moment in mauritius. Hike was harder than expected and it is really not for everyone but with our guide Yan we managed to get up and enjoy the view.

Great hike to Unesco heritage Le Morne Brabant

We hired a taxi for a day to get there and back from the north. The driver waited for us. On the way we asked him to stop by a supermarket in order to buy some food for the trip.
Easy to find the starting point at the gate. Make sure to start before the gate closes.
We went om our own without a guide. If you are an experienced hiker with proper hiking shoes with good grip and not fear of heights, you can go by yourself. Pretty tough climbing part where you need to use your hands as well.
Go on a dry day.
Great view on the summit.
We used 3,5 hours including breaks, photographing and the walk to the viewpoint .

Beautiful climb towards the top, with some very rewarding views once there! Be careful going to the top, because especially the last part of the hike can be quite demanding with a few tricky parts on the ‘path.’

The road till the mountain is VERY bad as of now (I hope they fix it), but the rest of the experience is great. Initial part of the trail is quite easy. It starts to get slightly steep as you move forward, but not at all a problem. Along the way, there’s a lot of small viewpoints with great views of Le Morne and nearby areas. After a while, you will reach a point with a yellow board saying “dangerous climb ahead”. This is when it gets really hard. The ascent is very steep, and you have to use your hands to climb up the rocks. Good experience is required here, and you should probably get a guide if you are a beginner. We unfortunately couldn’t go there due to the rain, which made it dangerous to climb. If you want a quick hike without too much difficulty, I suggest that you stop at the North viewpoint (which is what we did). It is a short detour from the point where you come across the start of the difficult section. The trail till here can easily be done by almost anyone (even on a wet day), and it is well marked. Views are obviously better at the top, but the north viewpoint isn’t too bad either. You can see a lot of the nearby landmarks and a couple of islands as well. If it is a rainy day, you’ll probably get clear views of a rainbow too! There’s a few rocks at the edge of the cliff where you can rest, and it offers an experience similar to that of being at the top. Either ways, the hike offers a very good exercise and rewarding views. Definitely try it out if you come to Mauritius.

To anyone thinking of climbing Le Mourne who has little experience, I really recommend using Prakash at Green Discovery. An inexperienced climber myself (and not very fit either) and with a huge fear of heights, Prakash made the unthinkable happen. I felt very safe and Prakash was really supportive/patient the whole time, both helping and guiding me step by step. Prakash was very attentive and brought along additional water and snacks for us. A local to the area, Prakash also told us many facts about the various plants/birds which was brilliant and really added to the experience. Amazing views - really recommend to anyone looking for a challenge! Prakash’s contact details +230 5 760-8367

The climb to the north viewpoint is not hard at all, most of the track is well paved and after around an hour of hiking you will be rewarded with the best views of both bays. The climb to the cross above is much harder and should not be attempted if wet

Incredible and pretty short hike if you are fit. As a keen hiker but with an annoying fear of heights, I would definitely describe the final sections as 'airy' aka exposed and if you slip there's a fair chance of serious injury or death. Having done some pretty hefty hiking peaks (~6000m ) i found this exposure definitely tested my resolve.

In summary it's fantastic, physically very doable - it took an hour to get up. The exposure adds to the excitement for sure but I would describe as type 2 fun towards the top (ie not fun at the time but fun in hindsight. Type 1 fun = fun at the time and in hindsight, type 3 fun = not fun, ever).

Take care.

Make sure you take the trip early morning on sober bases. We took off up the trail at 12 noon and nearly died, after a New Years Celebration. It takes about an hour to two, depending on how fit you are. Make sure you take enough water with you and are wearing comfortable hiking shoes. At the beginning of the trail you will find the Heritage Village, which is an interesting walk around the history of Mauritius.

A must do in Mauritius if you're in decent physical shape (and not too afraid of heights). We hiked to the top in the early morning to benefit from the cooler air. While the path for getting to the top is quite clear (both whether you start from the kitesurf beach or the other access path to the south east), we decided to go with Prakash from Greendiscovery as it was our first time and had gone with him on an incredible hike along the 7 waterfalls in Riviere Noire. We were very glad that he came with us as that morning it was raining on and off and one part of the hike can get very muddy/slippery in a steep couloir where you have to scramble up/down. Particularly for that part, would strongly recommend some good grippy shoes. The rest of the hike went perfectly well and when the clouds cleared out we had stunning views from the very top! Strongly recommend this hike as well as any others that Prakash can take you on (+230 57608367).
