About
The Hart Cluett Museum, operated by Historic Rensselaer County, is a dynamic not-for-profit established in 1927 to connect local history & heritage with contemporary life. Situated in Troy, New York's picturesque downtown Second Street Historic District, our 5 galleries & programs are located in two adjacent 19th-century townhouses and a carriage house. Our furnished house museum is the architecturally significant 1827 marble Hart-Cluett House while our Carr Building showcases fun exhibits, outstanding archives, and a research library. Throughout three seasons we offer Walking Tours and Hidden History Tours. Our renowned four-day-long annual Holiday Greens Show opens Thursday at noon one week after Thanksgiving. Enjoy holiday magic in the Hart-Cluett House Museum decorated in live greens, fragrant garland, and fresh flowers. Troy's widely popular Victorian Stroll grew with the beloved tradition that is the Holiday Green's Show.

This museum is the home of the Rensselaer County Historical Society and it is one of the hosts of Troy's annual Victorian Stroll. The Hart & Cluett families were early wealthy Troy families and owned banks, mills (collars & cuffs hence Troy's nickname The Collar City), sponsored Emma Willard School & RPI College. You can tour the entire house on three floors. At Christmas time the house is splendidly decorated to reflect the 1800s. This day is also a major fund raising event for the museum. Many volunteers are available throughout to answer any visitor's questions. Also is the home of many of Troy's historical artifacts. A must for history buffs. Also they offer educational experiences for school children.

A small but very nice museum with local historical exhibits, including on types of work and industry in the area, and my favorite a room dedicated to Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam Wilson of Troy was the inspiration for the Uncle Sam that we have today to represent the US. A very nice way to spend an hour.

We are sorry, but you've apparently reviewed the wrong business! We are the Rensselaer County Historical Society, (we also have galleries, a research library, and The Hart-Cluett Historic House Museum). Please remove this review when you have the chance. Thank you.

Troy has an annual Victorian Stroll at Holiday time. I have been the this Historical Society several times for that and toured the house. It's a great snapshot of the history of not only the house, family but also includes a glimpse of a manufacturing families life style of the time including some mystery of the city itself.

Our son who lives in Troy took us to the Historical Society. We like it. Gives a sense of American history (including Uncle Sam from Troy) . what we found most interesting were the old radiators (used for heating in the early 20th. century). They were crafted beautifully with different forms & shapes. Some old stoves & ovens were interesting too. There was an old carriage ( not in great shape) which belonged to a rich family of Troy. Do visit this place. It is located in a quiet lane and is recommended for all. Though young kids are not likely to enjoy it.

RCHS is housed in the Hart-Cluett Mansion. Their greens show at Christmas time is spectacular! It is held the weekend of Troy's Victorian Stroll. Well worth a visit.

The annual greens show is always fabulous in early December - and the archival materials for genealogists is unparalleled. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. Always closed for the month of January so keep that in mind!

Bring the grandchildren here for a delightful visit and see how the Historical Society decorated a Christmas tree each year. Absolutely breathtaking and very different each year. Besides the tree mostly the whole inside was also decorated and it was gorgeous

Nancy F. Great to hear you and your grandchildren enjoyed your visit here! Our many Van Rensselaer Garden Club volunteers and RCHS staff will be pleased to know their work was a joy to both generations. Each year there is a different theme and each season new exhibits in the galleries so you are correct, there is much more than a spectacular tree. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
