The colors were amazing, but getting there was a sketchy experience. Road construction re-routed us and driving to the mountain felt like a deliverance road trip. Once we arrived, a small unmanned set of barricade arms prevented you from going any further unless you had a coin (which we did) and then a small winding drive up to the top. It was not maintained and showed it's age, but offered a nice view of the fort once you can get your bearings. It took about 5 minutes to do this and back down you went; nothing exciting to see here folks.

We first visited Fort Ticonderoga and got a token to go up to the top of Mt. Defiance, without the token the cost is $10 (which seems a little much). The drive up is a steep road with a small parking area at the top. The view down to the fort and the surrounding area is excellent and the history is quite interesting. We spent about 20 mat the top, which seemed like enough time. There are some picnic tables at the top.

We went after the official season ended. We left the car in the parking area at the bottom and walked up. There are cannon at strategic spots over looking Ft Ticonderoga but I am not sure they are the original ones. A map and interpretive sign in the shelter at the top explain the importance of the site. Apparently the Americans gave up the fort when they realized that they could be bombarded from above. No shots were fired.

Great views of the surrounding area and the fort. When we went the gate was locked, but we hiked up it. It is a steep one mile hike. If you go to the Fort first they give you a token to get up to the mountain so that you do not have to pay on site.

Getting there from the Fort was a bit confusing because of serious road construction. Google did not route us around it so if you are crunched for time, leave 10 minutes earlier just to be safe. We got to the gate 5 minutes before closing time but were able to enjoy some impressive views.

After visiting Ft. Ticonderoga, we drove up to Mt. Defiance. It is included in the admission fee to the fort. The view is amazing and it was especially beautiful during the peak of fall colors. I liked that we were able to see the fort from there. Well worth the extra time to check it out!

Went up only because it was included in the Fort Ticonderoga admission, glad we did. A great view of the area at near peak foliage, wish it had been a clear day.
Not sure if I would want to take a car up it, the road is narrow, steep and rough.

Although Mount Defiance is a path leading up to a great view of Fort Ticonderoga and the lake, it's much more. It's the history, put yourself up there in the 1700's with Indian tribes below and massive sailing ships on the lake firing cannon. Today it's a paved road with a great view, but when you have the history and a bit of imagination I do think this becomes a wonderful experience.

We visited Mt. Defiance as part of our trip to Ft. Ticonderoga. Upon paying the entry fee at the fort, you will receive a coin to put in the machine to open the gate to Mt. Defiance. You will need to get out of your car to put the coin in the machine because it’s not possible to do it while seated in a car. The road is narrow and steep and not suitable for large vehicles. Parking is below the summit and there is a short, steep walk to the top.

This is the 2nd time I have been up to Mt Defiance and the view is spectacular. This time the experience was even better because an interpreter was present and enthusiastically shared his knowledge about the significance of the spot with regards to Fort Ticonderoga. Small parking area and a short but steep climb to the pavilion. Worth the exercise!

Has anyone done the hike to the top? If so we would like details, length, terrain, incline etc. I enjoy hiking, but we are in our 60's and no the best shape we could be in! Thank you!

It is very walkable. The inclines are steep but not too steep. Since you're taking your time you can always stop and rest. At least you're not pushing a cannon up the mountain like they did during the Revolutionary War.
