- MareH9 contributionsLoved the landscapingThe grounds are beautiful and the house is a different design. The furniture isn't rich looking, but that is what he had in his house at that time. It is amazing to see the Hudson River right there and a railroad on the side of his house. Very interesting. Enjoyed walking around the grounds.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 November 2023
- Rich SBoston, Massachusetts33 contributionsHistoric house tour, exploring the history of Washington Irving, his family and envrirons. It is a small historic house on a large property. Irving designed the house himself, and it incorporates many European influences from the American Romantic period. Visiting as we did in December was not an ideal time to explore the grounds, but the house was a great tour with very knowledgeable guides.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 December 2023
- phileaskerouacNew York City, New York84 contributionsPerfect "Sleepy Hollow" Halloween Experience. Thank you!Perfect place for a charming and thrilling "Sleepy Hollow" Halloween experience. My partner brought me here for a Spooky surprise after we also attended the Halloween procession of the damned at St. John the Divine in Manhattan. Loved both, but Sunnyside's Sleepy Hollow reading and enactment was special. Charmingly naive, quirky, spooky .... like a village play back in the day. The professional narrator was epic. I know he's a big deal on Youtube and various platforms, I can see why. Will def be back. Thank you all!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 February 2024
- DavidCanton, Michigan454 contributionsSunnyside in TarrytownThe history of Sunnyside was definitely worth doing the tour. The staff was very informative and knowledgeable. The Rockefellers bought the estate when Washington Irving passed away to keep the legend alive. Everything in the estate was original after his passing. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow lives”Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 September 2024

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Washington Irving's Sunnyside House on a Sunday in Mid-August. It is a smallish but lovely house set on acres of ground next to the Hudson River. We had a great tour guide (in mid-1800’s period dress) for our house tour. The house is bigger inside than it appears from outside and has many of Irving’s original furnishings, as it was in the Irving family until 1945 when it became a museum. Although the grounds definitely need sprucing up, the house itself appeared to be in very nice shape. Irving led an interesting life and was much more than just the famous Legend of Sleepy Hollow author. We combined this tour with a separate tour of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, just a few miles away. They complemented each other nicely. We have visited many “Gilded Age” mansions of the rich and famous and this house that predates that era put a new perspective on what it meant to be rich in the 1840s and 1850s for us. Of course, YMMV as we enjoy all aspects of American history.

This is a wonderfully preserved house with great literary and New York state history. Our guide, Hal, was really excellent. He kept the tour moving while telling us a vast amount of history about Washington Irving and the era. He really got us interested in Irving and was extremely personable and knowledgable.
The house itself is a charmer with an impressive view of the Hudson. We highly recommend visiting it.

Interesting to explore Washington Irving's home - nothing grand here but you got a nice sense of life for the middle class. And it is "down the hill" so you got a nice view of the Hudson. Thanks to COVID & small quarters, you could not go to the 2nd floor but the costumed guides did a nice job in each room.

The home outside is cottage like and lovely. The home inside is chopped up with very narrow hallways and not really much to see. It takes about 10 minutes to go through the house and you leave somewhat disappointed. The focus, of course, us on Ichabod Crane and Sleepy Hollow with some artwork depicting this. All in all, I would rather have gone elsewhere.

We attended the Irvings Legend with storyteller Jonathan Kruk.
It was a night show that was the perfect setting for hearing the legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Mr. Kruk was captivating and entertaining. The tale ended with an appearance of the headless horseman. Highly recommend this experience.

We did both the Legendary Tour and the Legend performance and both were excellent. We learned a lot about Washington Irving and his life as well as got to see some specific paintings and items related to the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and learn more about that story and connection to his life, etc. We then attended a performance of the Legend, which was really enjoyable and had a nice surprise at the end. My only complaint is that the chairs are set up in such a way that each row is actually lower than the one in front of it. As a 4Ft8 tall adult, I had trouble seeing in the second row. And you could not just get there early to get a good seat because they let you all in at once. I know kids were definitely having trouble seeing.

Great place to see the residence of one of the most celebrated authors in American History. Washington Irving, the father of modern literature, was an inspiration to authors like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain, and others to name a few. The home has most of the original belongings in the house and we had a wonderful tour guide who had such a great knowledge of Washington Irving, his family, and the time. Would definitely recommend visiting this place and getting a tour when in the area.

I traveled to Sleepy Hollow as I have always loved the story. Being that I am an author myself and having just come from Salem and visiting the House Of Seven Gables and Nathaniel Hawthorne home I was very excited to visit the home of Washington Irving and learn more about him. Sadly, those that run the tours have deemed it to be a weekend only thing. I have to start back home to be back to work and can't extend it, therefore I miss out and am disappointed and that is putting it mildly. That and unlike Hawthorne's House of Seven Gables where you could get photos and walk around on the outside, Irvings Estate is locked down like Fort Knox. So, no chance there either. And being I don't plan on coming back this way again I get to miss out. So, those who run the estate and do the tours wake up! Not everyone can come on a weekend but guess you weren't thinking about that one were you! Again, disappointed in this and in the town in general. Was expecting a lot more.

I took an afternoon tour of Sunnyside on a beautiful warm day in November and found a fascinating house with a storied past in pristine shape. The house almost looks like Washington Irving and his family were still living there.
The tables are set with food for the midafternoon meal and the kitchen looks like it had been set for the happenings of the house. The whole house was furnished with family possessions and heirlooms. You really see how the family lives and the norms of the times.
The grounds are not the same as in the Spring months but were still beautiful with all the foliage.
It really is an amazing tour into the storybook home of this storybook man who brought so much literary joy to the public.

A nice little tour. A bit small, but to be expected for a house built in that time period. We ended up with a last minute tour guide, and while he sounded knowledgeable he didn't sound like he enjoyed it very much.

I sure would like to know how to purchase tickets online in advanced so we would be able to go inside Washington Irving's home? Is there a way to do that? Please advise.
Written 27 September 2016
Yes, tickets can be purchased online through the historic Hudson valley website. Go to the historic Hudson valley website, whose address can't be posted for some reason, and look for tickets on the right hand side. Click that and then select the date on their calendar that you wish to visit. The drop down menu underneath will list all of the places in historic Hudson valley. Select Sunnyside and it will bring you to a list of times they have available that day, proceed from there. Enjoy!

can you get tour tickets onsite or just online? can you walk the grounds or need a ticket to enter?
Written 27 September 2015
Hi Samantha, There is limited access to the grounds without a ticket. You really can't get much further than the parking lot and the walk to the office. Lyndhurst on the other hand, right next door allows full access to the grounds and views of the river. The only ticketed access there is getting into the house.
Sunnyside was worth the admission though. I hope this response isn't too late. I'm not sure about online tickets, check their website or the Tarry Town visitor's center.
Enjoy!
