Mount Hope, dedicated in 1838, is America's first municipal Victorian Cemetery. Set in a picturesque landscape shaped by retreating glaciers, the cemetery contains priceless pieces of art and rare horticultural specimens. It is the final resting place of many dignified and internationally known individuals, including Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, and is on the National Park Services National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Mount Hope is listed in the New York State Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places as part of the Mt. Hope/Highland Preservation District, featuring 83 mausoleums, soaring Egyptian obelisks, a Florentine cast-iron fountain, two stone chapels in the Gothic Revival style, a Moorish gazebo, a Victorian Gothic gatehouse, and infinitely varied tombstones marking 350,000 graves across 196 acres.

Beautiful water features, not boring and flat ... the hills and slopes make it a very enjoyable pretty walk through. Very peaceful. Seeing Susan B. Anthony's grave, the majestic mausoleums, all the old gravestones was very pleasant and enjoyable.

Remarkable cemetery. I could have wandered through the enormous hills and valleys of this cemetery for several days. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time on this visit to do so. I will be back after doing research.

We paid our respects to Frederick Douglass, the civil rights icon, author, and former slave, who is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, as is Susan B. Anthony. You can drive through and then walk to points of interest. Recommended for families with teens.

Probably in most areas~but would suggest caution. Some of the best monuments need you to walk on grassy areas to be seen.

Check with office and ask if a docent is agailable, it's worth it to get geography and historical info. One crypt has Tiffany windows.
