This park is pretty nice in summer, and serves as the location of the Penfield fireworks display every July 4th. But I REALLY recommend that you visit this park in the snowy parts of winter, because it offers the best sledding of anyplace in town. Drive straight to the back of the park and up the large hill, where you can find parking for a lot of cars. The top of the hill is right across the other side of the lot, where you will find a long downhill run that will take you a couple hundred yards east, towards Route 250. This is a gorgeous hill for sledding, and is even more attractive because there are no trees or obstacles to get in your way. Also, you can move towards the sides of the hill (either direction) if you have toddlers who want a "baby hill" to slide down. The sides aren't as steep or as populated as the middle of the slope. You've got to try this place!

This is a wonderful park that has a huge variety of athletic facilities for almost everything (except soccer fields). it is often wide open, for people looking to play almost any sport (including basketball, tennis, etc). It is also a great place to take the kids in the winter for sledding, as it has a great hill that is steep enough for anything. I do recommend this place.

We live close to the park and it is always well maintained and groomed. There are good facilities and regardless of the season we've enjoyed it. We've sledded on the hill in the winter and enjoy the fireworks on July 4th. It is a great partk.

This park has a great lodge for parties and celebrations. Good facilities with a very nice playground. It has nice sports fields for playing games. And an open space to create your own off tennis courts or baseball diamonds.
Note- not the kind of park to walk around much as the other Penfield parks- yet perfect for an occasion (game or party)
They also have a big hill that is great for sledding in the winter and then open space turns into an outdoor party with vendors for fireworks in July.

The hill in the park is the perfect size for sledding with kids. Not too steep and long enough for a good ride but not too long for the walk back to the top. Plenty of parking at top of hill and in school lot on weekends.
Also have little playground at top of hill for younger children.

This is a park that is truly four-season in nature. In the summer, you can play just about any kind of sport imaginable, including baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, basketball, and yes - even horseshoes! It has plenty of room (and all the facilities) for all these activities. But in the winter, when the snow covers the ground, it turns into an extraordinary place to take a sled or snowboard and climb the sledding hill for a fast and glorious ride down. It is steep, but not too steep for even the youngest sledders. (Make sure they go down the less sloped sides of the hill and they'll be fine.) There is no place in this park in the summer to purchase food, but that's about the only thing missing. Picnic tables and grills are also located on top of the hill. Spend the day there...enjoy!

I take my dog up here 2 to 3 times a day. Meet the same people/dogs. I feel safe going alone at anytime and during the summer/fall the restrooms are open. Great parking. Love this park!!!!

We went to see the 4th of July fireworks inside Harris Whalen Park. It's a great place for doing almost everything, including sports (summer and winter), picnics, and major events. But the bathroom space inside the park can get overwhelmed quickly at larger events, so plan accordingly.
Helpful hint: for REALLY large events, such as the annual fireworks, park in the lots on Route 250, like in the plaza with Monte Alban, and then just walk through the opening in the woods in the back of the park. It's MUCH easier, and you won't get stuck in an hour-long traffic jam after the event lets out.
