About
The folk tradition is kept alive in Santorini Fira Condohori in cave that was built half a century or so ago. Where today houses the Folklore Museum, worth visiting the traveler. The Folk Museum was founded by Emmanuel A. Hardy, lawyer, journalist and director of the newspaper "New Theraic". The house, which is set, left untouched by the earthquakes of 1956, restored in 1973 and since then placed this antique furniture, family heirlooms, the position does belong. In 1993 the Museum was built wing housing the Gallery and laboratories, and the church of St. Constantine, in memory of the owner of the property Constanti Emm Lignou, uncle of the founder.

The Folklore Museum is located in a cave house built in 1861, which is located in the northern part of Fira, or rather in the neighboring hamlet called Kontochori. The museum is simply an old winery with carpentry, shoemaker, tinsmith and cooper workshops, as well as an art gallery and a library. Nearby there is the Agios Konstantinos chapel with a bell tower and a ceremony hall. In the garden and courtyard there are places to sit among trees and flowers. Here you can see a traditional winery, a cellar with wines, vats, barrels and a wine press, as well as carpentry, cooper's, shoemaker's and sheet metal tools. The art gallery contains works of artists inspired by the island of Santorini, and the library contains lithographs, manuscripts, books and photos depicting the island.

This is a place worth visiting but unfrotunately it is not widely advertised or recommended by the travel guides. It covers the ways of life of Santorini folks as it was not so long ago.

We were pleasantly surprised by the personal tour we had of the folklore museum in Fira. We learned about the specific family that lived in this place, but also learned about how resourceful the locals have to be because of conditions of living on an island with little rainfall, and with most goods needing to be imported.
We got lost finding it, so realize it is NOT near the caldera but rather off the main road in the direction of Oia from Fira. The google maps was wrong about its location.

As we were walking through the road below Fira and taking pictures of the St. Helen and Konstantinos Orthodox Church we stumbled across the Lignos Folklore museum. We decided to visit the museum where we were welcomed by Gina. For a 3€ admission per person Gina toured the museum with us while entertaining all our questions. This museum gives you a good idea of what the day-to-day lives were like for Santorinians dating as far back as the 1850's. I definitely recommend taking 30 min out of the day to get a glimpse of some great historical artifacts. The staff is very knowledgeable which helps bring the experience to life!

This museum is not well advertised or indeed signposted. However, it is well worth seeking out. It is small with an english speaking guide thrown in, so it won't take hours and bore the kids if you have them. Basically, it is based on the original cave houses used by the Santorinians. When they needed more space, they dug another cave. The artefacts on view, from living quarters, to wine making, a cobbler and carpenter give a real feel for how life might have been. I strongly recommend seeking out thislittle gem to while away an hour or so and as a contrast to the hustle and bustle of Fira.

Myself and my partner visited the museum today and were greeted by a very welcoming Jenny. Jenny took us round the museum, explaining everything that we saw and answering any questions that we had. The most interesting part is that it is very deceiving and you wouldn’t imagine that there is a mine underneath! It’s amazing to see all of the original pieces and how much effort it took for the creation of things such as; papers, clothes and wine. I couldn’t recommend this place enough, it was lovely to be out of the hustle and bustle of Santorini and to take a trip down memory lane! Amber & Rose

We loved this place. It is a private museum so has quite a history we adored having the guide to explain everything and answer questions. There were several cool facts that surprised us too. I highly recommend.

Like the Prehistoric Museum, we found this little museum very interesting. If includes displays of pictures relating to the various earthquakes and eruptions over the centuries, as well as various original documents produced during Santorini's history under Turkish, Venetian and Greek control. The only black spot on our visit was when a large Italian lady ignored the rope over an antique chair and decide to sit in it for a photo opportunity, causing it to break, which she seemed to consider highly amusing.

I liked visiting this small museum in Fira that used to be the ancestral family home of one Mr Lignos who moved out to Athens.
All of the buildings on the property of the museum gave an interesting little snapshot of life in Santorini during the late 19th century and early 20th century. I liked walking around and seeing everything but my friend was underwhelmed LOL
The museum's manager who was also the guide was very informative and polite and I listened closely to what she had to say about each room in each building. It only costs €5.00 Euros in cash to see the entire museum with the guide so it's pretty reasonable price wise to go and visit and the museum's manager does have change on hand for the cash. There are also public restrooms available for visitors.
Even though my friend and I visited this museum during the height of summer when all of the main streets in Fira were bustling and looked so packed with people and things when we entered the museum during the early afternoon the only other visitor in the museum was just about to leave so it was just the museum's manager, my friend and I in the museum at the time.
I thought it was pretty charming and I loved the pretty courtyard outside and took pictures of the flowering trees and the Lignos family's private chapel which was very well preserved and interesting.
To me it was time well spent. Go and see it if you like history including history that's not so ancient.

We loved this beautiful and fascinating museum and highly recommend visiting here! We had an excellent, welcoming guide who really enhanced our experience. It was wonderful to get a glimpse into Santorini's incredible history and get a chance to see and hear how people lived in the past. The grounds are gorgeous and so is the private chapel... this museum is a special find!
