I went there for work and has no expectation. Hence I was very surprised by how nice and vibrant the place was. So much to see between floating markets, houses, fishing areas, etc. They even have some hotels and small gift shops with locally made stuff (good way to support the local community). Great day out

Managed to organize a boat through Edouard Houmenou +229 96311011 who also acted as a tour guide for our trip and was very knowledgable about the different floating markets, fishing techniques and different villages on the lake including Ganvie. The docks are about 45 minutes from Cotonou so it's an easy day trip. Edouard arranged to take us to a village at the far end of the lake called Dekanmey which has a diety which protects the residents from ligthning. Great trip but unfortunately it rained in the morning the day the trip was organized and there was overcast skies most of the day.

Firstly it's my own village. My family lives there and I spend my week-ends there. I always take my clients there do that they can experience the life style on water. It is just so amazed.

Depending on traffic, you get quickly to the departure point from Cotonou. A great 1hour+ outing to see how people live every day on the water and what their live looks like in 'The Venice of Africa'.

Well worth a trip to this interesting village with all buildings on stilt over the lake. Went with a local so no trouble finding dock for boats or negotiating price. Fees really minimal and a bargain if going in a group since boat was a flat rate. Our boat had a young man who offered to act as a guide "for whatever we wished to pay" though there was a suggestion of CFA5000 - less than $10. Stanislaus said he was a resident, told us all about the history and explained how the fishing works. Was open to any question and though he spoke very little English he spoke slowly in clear French making most of the tour understandable to my limited French. Only two stops to shop and nothing at all pushy in either place. They were pleasant interludes. All in all a fascinating half day visit in a country not long on things to do in down time/

Ganvie is a lake village in Benin, Africa lying in Lake Nokoué, near Cotonou. With a population of around 20,000 people, it is probably the largest lake village in Africa. The locals aren't fond of photos. I traveled solo and was able to negotiate a fair price with one of the boat operators.

Our group took a private water taxi from a fishing dock in Cotonou. Many folks in our group had toured similar stilt villages in Asia and other parts of Africa. We felt welcomed and the folks treated us well. We always asked before taking a picture. Despite the circumstances of their dwellings many of the houses were painted in bright colors. We were also fascinated by the lively water commerce, that is, women in small boats plying the water selling household products and men in similar boats selling fish. We stopped at a small auberge for drinks and souvenirs. Our tour lasted about 90 minutes.

We decided to go by private taxi instead of using the public transport - it was only 7000 cfa return, so if are 3 or 4, it is approximately the same price, much quicker and hassle free. Our taxi waited for us until we were back, otherwise it is 4000 cfa one way.
The trip itself is interesting, do take a covered pirogue since the scorching sun is vicious.
I would like to recommend as a guide Benjamin KOUNOU, +229-97094940. Very knowledgeable, patient, civilized and not pushy at all (unlike some of the others we encountered). You can also write to him in advance (Benjaminkounou@gmail.com). he will meet you and take care of the whole process. Recommended !!

The stilt village was not really what I expected. Interesting although its a bit run down. Felt a bit unwelcome as the people living there were not very friendly and it’s clear that people do not like to be photographed, although that’s understandable. Not as picturesque as I expected. An hour visit is enough.
