The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge takes you over the border between Canada and the USA. It is next to the former railway crossing.

I really enjoyed the stunning views of the River Niagara and in the distance you can also see the Falls. An amazing experience.

The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is my favourite border cry in the Niagara area, but it is only for NEXUS card holders. There are many reasons why we cross here. First of all it is very quick. We cross the border here about 10X each year and the longest wait I have ever experienced was 5 minutes. Often there are no cars in line. This crossing doesn't feel as hostile/intimidating as the others north and south of here. Because the toll is only collected electronically, you need to have your NEXUS card or EZ-pass linked to a credit card. The only drawbacks to this crossing are that you exit the highways (405 or I-90) for a few miles in order to cross the bridge. Also there is no duty free store at the bridge.

The Whirlpool Rapids bridge replaced the original Niagara Falls suspension bridge, with the new metal truss built under the road and rail decks, then attached, then the cables and towers taken down, with the bridge never closed for more than a few hours. Quite a feat for the late 1800s.
The upper deck is used by the daily Amtrak Maple Leaf, the lower deck by commuters with NEXUS trusted traveller cards. There is beautiful metalwork but since the sidewalk is closed, you have to appreciate it while driving slowly.
Note that the bridge is closed to car traffic from April 1-May 4 2019 while they remove the overhead parkway trestle on the NY side.

Just down the road from the Rainbow bridge you can find the Whirlpool Rapids bridge we saw it flying over in a helicopter, there are two bridges one for roads users and the other trains, a stunning piece of metal frame work, worth a view either above or driving past.

Bridge between Canada and the USA with beautiful views. Good view of the bridge from the falls, and good view of Niagara Falls from the bridge.
