We have ridden the trail for years. The true ambassadors are the local merchants who rent bikes in Copake Falls and Millerton. If you have a problem or want to help with he trail call them. Very happy and positive people as are the local merchants near the trail.
You can take your bike on the train from NYC to Wassaic.
The sad thing is that the management/non-profit group who should welcome suggestions or interest in the trail and folks who want to volunteer...
We actually were going to make a donation but were turned off.

This is a good trail which could be great but organization needs to learn how to be friendly to the public that uses the trail and supports it.

So ride the trail, support the local merchants and hope that the trail management gets better people skills in the future!

Great mostly flat ride from Wassaic train station to Millerton, NY on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. A protected trail with well marked crossings. Riders of all levels can enjoy this ride about 10-11 miles one way / 21 miles +/- round trip. With a break in Millerton it will take about 4 hours depending upon how quickly you / your group ride. There is a great diner, tea store, antiques, art ... multiple items to shop for given your interests and how long of break you want to take before riding back to Wassaic or wherever you entered the trail.

Decided to take the bike out for a Sunday ride and remembered this trail from last year when I went to Bash Bish Falls. The trail is probably 30 miles long (?) and partially completed so didn't do the whole thing. Trail runs along the Taconic Mountain Range which runs north/south along the MA, NY and CT borders. Had great sunny weather and gorgeous views. There were a fair amount of people out this day, riding/walking/running. I did several miles and once they complete the section at the southern end where I went and connects to an already open trail section, I'll head back.

Bring your bike along, and bike north to Millerton and back. It is an asphalted path where the railroad used to continue north, and lands you in Millerton with many options for refreshment.

Great 11 mile ride from Wassaic NY Train station to Millerton--ride past ponds, fields, in shade and sun. 300 feet total elevation, so not strenuous. Millerton offers bookstores, coffee shops, ice cream, etc etc--great place for lunch before you head back. Or start in Millerton and save your eating for after the 22 mile round trip.

This trail is wonderful. We park at the Wassaic train- parking free on the weekends -and ride to the end of this part of the trail in Millerton. Nice and flat - lovely scenery past farms and an old train station. There are some bathrooms and porta johns, a few benches and picnic tables. This route is 10.7 miles each way. We always have lunch in Millerton- try 52 Main, delicious tapas

If you're looking for a wonderful place to walk, bike, roller blade or stroll, theHarlem Valley Rail Trail will take you miles through beautiful farmland, cool vistas, and gorgeous scenery. Every day is different with wild flowers, birds, and small animals. Watch local crops grow, smell wild roses, and enjoy nature along a well maintained, asphalt trail. You will come back a new and reenergized person.

With its new open segment, the rail trail is now about 24.5 miles in length from the hamlet of Wassaic to Orphan Farm Road, on the north side of Taconic State Park. The best part about the trail is that it combines views of woodlands, farmlands and wetlands with the Taconic Mountains framing them. While there are few services directly on the trail (The town of Millerton and the Depot Deli and Bash Bish Bicycles in Taconic State Park are exceptions) there are many options within a mile or so of the trail. As well there are some great options for other activities nearby: Alander Mountain and Bash Bish Falls are two hiking options and Copake Iron Works is an interesting historical site. Or, if shopping is more your style, Millerton has fun and unique shops.

This is a lovely trail. Paved, not crowded, several entry points and lots of diverse scenery. Flat and easy to navigate. You do have some serious cyclists but they are respectful and don't fly past you at 80 with no warning. If you are walking, just be courteous and stay to the right or at least be mindful of bicycles.

This is a nice, easy bike trail through scenic Dutchess county. I rode the section from Millerton to Wassaic, about 21 miles. I was hoping the section from Millerton to Under Mountain Rd would be completed, but alas no luck. Maybe next year. The trail is paved and wide enough to pass walkers and other cyclists safely. The trail runs across several roads. Road crossings are well marked, but some of the roads are busy so be cautious. Everyone I passed was friendly and smiled hello, making it a lovely ride.
