We came at 8am for a morning hike and found the gates closed off of 82 until 8:30. We went to the main campus and found trails from there. There were several short trails in the woods, but most of the walking was via paved road. We covered 3 miles with some hills included. Next time we'll come a bit later and enter from the other side.

The grounds are very large. There is a lowlands circuit, paved road with many pull-offs, that goes through several type of habitats. It is a great place for birding in spring and fall. Then there is a highland swamp, the Fern Glenn, that has two different types of swamp in a very small area with pitcherplants in one area. Plants are well pointed out. There are maps to explore the trail system and to see the flowers and animals living there. Both places are highly recommended, the Fern Glenn area particularly with children 4 years and up. There is also space for long hikes through pristine woodland for adults. This place is not well known, so you wont run into large groups - but you might encounter a brown bear! It's truly peaceful.

Enjoyed walking the Cary trails through the woods and along the river; spent several hours there. Cary has a beautiful fern grotto with meandering paths and a deck with chairs overlooking the river that runs through the property. It's shady on a hot day and trails are easy and well marked. Definitely worth a visit.

Beautiful campus with marked trails and picnic spots. Friday night lectures. Scientists are doing advanced research on Lyme disease, woodland ecology, stream and river viability and many other topics . No Dogs. nice interior roads for bike riding. Lots of wild life. A GEM! Call for hours.

We saw this place by the side of the road and drove in to see what it was...we saw a gentleman and asked if it were a museum or something. He said it wasn't a museum but an "ecological think tank" where scientists addressed ecological concerns. He said right now, among other things, they are are researching tick borne diseases and how to prevent them. He said that the have lectures and classes from time to time. He gave us some interesting literature and encouraged us to hicke their nature trails. We hadn't planned on hiking ( we were wearing dress shoes) He said that non hikers can drive on paved trails, We didn;t have time to totally explore the place but we are definitely planning to go back and see more.

The Cary Institute is a very serious research facility for the study of the environment. It has several buildings and outdoor areas where research is conducted, so it is not a place to bring your grill and enjoy a cook-out, but it is beautiful and seriously maintained. Great place to go for walks and observe nature.

This place is a local treasure, and the lectures are very enjoyable. We came to the trails for a Fathers' Day picnic.
