I have been visiting Sandanona for 20+ years. We’re Upland members and use all the Orvis facilities (NY, PA, AL). These are great facilities to bring friends and family, and my children have been trained on the clay course and in the field by many of their fine instructors! My only complaint about Sandanona has been in the making from some of my most recent visits going back to winter ‘23 hunts / clay course experience and it involves only the personnel who book your hunts or time on the clay course, and help with any outfitting needs in the shop. I have no idea why they feel the need to be so rude, when seeking equipment or booking. Perhaps, Orvis could provide the team with some customer service / “being friendly” training? I hate to call out a specific individual Maria, I believe that is her name - thin woman long dark hair- could use the most training. There is no way Peggy or Brian would tolerate this kind of customer service if they were aware.

I took several friends who normally haul me off to play golf on an outing to Orvis Sandanona for a round of Sporting Clays. Neither of them had ever shot a gun before. We had a superb trapper(the guide/safety officer),Johnny K, who takes you around the two mile loop of shooting stands. Both of my friends were astonished how quickly they were able to pick up the basics, gun safety being the absolutely paramount skill, and they had a fantastic time that they will now surely repeat on their own. I have done this before with other friends and had the same outcome, so I strongly recommend that if you are in the area you look into this experience as something that is both out of the ordinary and a lot of fun.

For years Sandanona has been a family tradition for the Friday after Thanksgiving. We totally ignore crowds, "Doorbuster" hype, and head the 77 miles from our home in Greenwich to this delightful spot for a round of shooting, followed by lunch. The treat starts with the drive itself; the Taconic State Parkway, though very slightly infested with lurking speed cops, is one of the loveliest roads in the Metro Area. The people at Sandanona are very pleasant to deal with; the trappers are themselves experienced shots so one can get many of the benefits of a 'lesson' while just shooting a round; and for the lazy or decrepit (like me) they have for a modest additional charge shooting carts (basically four-seater golf buggies with gun racks). A word of advice: if you go with a group, it's not a bad idea for one person to rent a buggie just to carry ammo, jackets removed as the day warms up, and other detritus. The course is lovely, matching nice surroundings with challenging shots. We don't just go on Black Friday; four of us shot on Monday last and also had lunch there which was very satisfactory - - true home cooking served by nice people. A day at Sandanona is not cheap, but if you're looking for a first class outing, it's a bargain.

My husband and I found Sandanona by accident while driving through Dutchess County, NY admiring the scenery. We went in and they gave me a mini lesson on the spot. The gentleman who instructed me was very nice and extremely helpful. I've never used a gun of any kind before, and he immediately took the fear factor out of it for me, and gave me confidence in handling the gun. I never realized that sport clay shooting is so much fun, and I can't wait to go back and take a full lesson and learn more about the sport! We wound up having lunch here too in the lodge. The food was very good. All the staff at Sandanona are very nice and welcoming, and they made me feel very comfortable as a woman in a typically male area. The other patrons at the shooting grounds were very pleasant too. Also, the grounds/setting is beautiful. I would definitely recommend a visit here if you sport shoot, or if you'd like to learn. They also have regular hunting and fly fishing available at Sandanona.

I have been shooting at Sandanona with friends for about 5 seasons now (October through March). Peggy, the manager, runs a terrific operation. As a beginner to sporting clays a few years back everyone was more than helpful, always going the extra mile. Now that I shoot regularly, I remain impressed by the overall quality of the trappers and continued variety and challenges available on the sporting clays course. Whether you are a beginner or expert, Sandanona will make you feel welcome. I am sure you will have a wonderful experience.

I very recently attended the Orvis 1 day Wingshooting school in Manchester, VT with my husband and another couple. The other woman and I in our party were total shotgun newbies and it was our first experience with this sport.

I decided to visit Orvis - Sandanona and registered for a 1 day wingshooting class because I had come up with a list of questions since my last class. Also, it was a good way for a single (one person) to go clay shooting and my husband was away on his own weekend adventure elsewhere.

Our class was small and taught by Joe Wassi. I learned A LOT that day. I felt that we covered more information than my Manchester, VT class. The other person in my group was a total novice and Joe was VERY patient with both of us. We had a hearty and delicious lunch at the main lodge (included with the class). After we were mentally and physically worn out in the afternoon, Joe drove us around the clay shooting course so we could get a sense of what it was like. The shooting grounds are one of the things what differentiate this Orvis class location from the Manchester, VT experience. Sandanona is a shooting DESTINATION. I plan to return with family and friends.

Just a side note: I was a female novice traveling solo to this class. I felt very comfortable there and never felt awkward, even though shooting is a male dominated sport. Good teaching and good technique are the keys to success and Orvis is an excellent place to learn.

My first and only experience with Orvis Sandanona was absolutely awesome. I booked myself a solo lesson this morning and was able to get a spot on the same day, wanting to learn to shoot sporting clays. My visit took place on July 8, 2018. The appointment was made over the phone, and I was helped by a very professional Shannon and then again by Wendy.
Drove the hour from my house to the grounds and was introduced to my instructor, Jonathan. Jonathan took into account that I had never shot clays before, and went thru the basics with extreme thoroughness and answered my questions in a language that was easy to understand.
I will most definitely be going back to Sandanona, maybe even next weekend. A gem of a facility with some really top notch people. Take the opportunity to check this place out if you can...it is a little pricey, but so worth it when you consider what you are getting for your money.
Awesome place with some truly great people. If you need instruction, I couldn't reccommend Jonathan more highly. Definitely check it out.

My husband and I visited Orvis for a two day fly fishing class. Having never fly fished before, we were excited, but anxious that two days would have been to long for an experience we were not sure we would enjoy. We had a blast! The student/teacher ratio was perfect. It was almost like private instruction with just enough alone time to take in the surroundings. The instructors, Marc, Bob,and Rich were completely competent and knowledgeable. They were able to impart loads of information without leaving us overwhelmed. I was so impressed with their understanding and appreciation of nature and the generous way they taught us. We learned soooo much about fly fishing. Who knew there was so much to learn? We just scratched the surface, but we left with not only a good understanding of the basics, but a need to learn more. The nature was pristine and downright romantic! Yes, not a typing error, it was a romantic fishing trip. The river was so beautiful, it was almost overwhelming!

I took the 2 day sporting clay course at Sandanona earlier in August with the expectation of picking up a new hobby for when fishing was slow. Little did I know that after the first day, I would be hooked and researching my first shotgun that evening. As usual, for an Orvis run facility, the staff and instructors were amazing and always professional. The grounds were immaculate, and I had a great time learning the proper way to shoot. An added bonus was meeting some great shooting partners in my class!

Today, I went to pick up my new gun fresh from the factory and had a first time shooter in tow for a round of the clay course. The craftsmanship and quality of the gun is fantastic and I am extremely happy with my purchase through Sandanona. Our trapper, Kevin, was equally fantastic; he not only provided a friendly and fun atmosphere, but also took the time to make sure my colleague was comfortable with shooting and provided assistance and guidance until he too was blasting clays out of the sky. You really can't go wrong with a morning or afternoon cruising the grounds. While it may be a little pricey (think greens fees at a nice golf course), you get what you pay for and that is an experience at a top notch facility that will make you want to come back again and again.
