About
Mt. Van Hoevenberg combines outdoor recreations with Lake Placid’s Olympic Legacy. On the sliding center side, we have a state-of-the-art combined skeleton & bobsled track and we have created North America’s longest mountain coaster, The Cliffside Coaster. On the Nordic center side, we have added 4km of World Championship rate trails, joining our existing 50km of cross country skiing trails. Our new lodge, The Mountain Pass Lodge, is the Hub of Mt. Van Hoevenberg, and is the place to go for a drink, hang out with friends, or just spending a full day enjoying all the activities Mt. Van Hoevenberg has to offer.

Drove 7hrs after work with my 2 girls just to ride this coaster!!!! Purchased our tickets online 2 weeks in advance and prayed the weather would cooperate.
Tickets are pricey! ($55pp)
BUT....here are the bonus points....
1. Longest mountain coaster in the country!
2. Speakers in sleds give you the history of the bobsled run next to it!
3. You CANNOT crash into the sled in front of you due to high tech sensors!
4. Once you descend, you ARE an olympic bobsled driver!
5. The views are absolutely breathtaking!
We went for lunch afterward and back to motel for a power nap before driving 7hrs back home.
What a fun Day of the Dead treat!
Great for any age!

Our Legacy Tour lasted over an hour, and being an Olympics fan, I loved it! We got to go inside the training area where the athletes practice starting and pushing on a cart on ice. It’s cold in there so bring a jacket. We got to meet and talk with Sylvia Hoffman who won a bronze medal in 2022 Beijing! She showed us her medal. So cool! Then we got a ride to the top of the bobsled run and got to walk down inside the upper portion of the run! I never thought I would get to do that! Our guide was great providing tons of information. The tour is $15 but if you are a veteran or in the military ask for a discount! At the complex we also got to watch biathlon athletes training on wheels instead of skis around the course.

The Bobsled Experience is a short, expensive $125), poorly organized, and underwhelming ride. The zip line, which boards elsewhere, is the best thrill ride on this mountain (Van Hoevenberg), followed by the Cliffside Coaster. I would skip the Bobsled completely. I’ll review the zip line under the other facility.
The Cliffside Coaster ($55) is on the same slope & parking lot as the Bobsled. It boards just over the footbridge at the bottom. The main problem with the Cliffside Coaster is if the car ahead of you decides to take it slow, yours will jerk to a halt periodically and never get to full speed. So I would avoid getting on behind a parent with a child sitting between their legs. They are guaranteed to put the brakes on and spoil your ride! Get in a car behind a teenager or an adult without a small child.
If you’re an older rider and want to go top speed, you should inform the Coaster attendants or else they will “age-profile” you and give you little space between the preceding car. It’s really frustrating to pay full price and be given inadequate space to descend at full speed because of this ageist assumption.

It was interesting to go see the complex and the indoor track. They have indoor rock climbing as well, but we didn't do that. My husband and kids went on the cheaper cart ride at $55/person. One of my daughters said the best part was the historical information it gave her on the ride. Everyone seemed to think the ride was too slow.
My brother-in-law went on the big bobsled ride on the track with one of his kids and they really enjoyed it. That cost $125/person. They have a live feed of the track in the cafe area, which was nice. My sister-in law recorded it on her phone. It is hard to tell who is going on the sled, it would be nice if they put the customer's name at the bottom of the screen.

While Lake Placid is known for hosting the 1932 and 1980 winter Olympic games, the jumping complex, bobsled complex and other areas are still used every winter for National and International Olympic teams to train. During non winter times, you can take a wheeled bobsled ride, or walk the entire length of the bobsled run. You don't realize how steep the banked turns are watching it on TV. The walls are almost vertical. Well worth the visit.

The lodge complex was under construction however the ride was accessible. It was was very interesting to ride alongside the original bobsled run. Only thing I would suggest is they add a museum or something to walk through to get the full experience for the price paid and to include the ride.

I have always watched the bobsled and luge during the winter Olympics and was impressed. After seeing the actual place where the races took place I know that this is an "extreme" sport. We visited the area to experience a little bit of Olympic history; however, did not ride the coaster. It looks somewhat like a roller coaster. The building where there is a gift shop, cafe, and one purchases tickets is very nice!

Although the price has gone up quite a bit recently, you can get a short ride on an actual bobsled with a driver and brakeman supplied by the complex.
Unfortunately, the bobsled, starts from the lowest starting point on the track, rather that the top, where the official competitions begin
After a certain time of day, they switch over from using the track for Bobsleds to using it for the Skeleton Experience.
It is also possible to book a Biathlon experience at this complex. I have no idea what they do here in the summertime.

Paid $250 for 2 people to go down. It was definitely a cool experience, although you only do 1/2 the run and not the whole thing, I just don’t think it was worth the price. The website mentions you get a pin, photo, a gift from the shop…we finished and received a pin. We had to ask about the photo and they said, “Oh, yeah, go downstairs and they will get it for you.” They ask you what picture is yours, hand you a card to scan, and you have to request the link to download the photo. After I received the e-mailed link, I zoomed it and realized it wasn’t even us. We also had to ask about the gift. They said they were out of the t-shirts they usually give people and the guy ran around trying to find something to give us (he ended up taking merchandise off the rack). Again, really cool experience, but I’d never pay $250 to do it again.

I was really impressed with how real this was. I’m no wimp in terms of roller coaster type rides but this was both fun and dangerous at the same time. You have to be at least 48 inches to ride. There is a driver and brakeman in front and back. I rode with my 2 young kids and we sat in between the pros. We were fitted for helmets. You hold onto a strap on each side. Unlike the video, there was no steel cage above us. The ride lasted less than a minute and I really felt the G forces as we went down the icy track. Looking back, I could see how any mishap would have been a disaster with young children on it. This is not a ride. It is more of a bucket list type experience. It’s worth the price.

Is it difficult to get walk in tickets? We missed the reservation period. Do they run all day or are there specified sessions?

Go to the complex near the High School and the outdoor Ice Skating Rink and Museum and you should find answers to any of your questions. Enjoy your stay in beautiful Lake Placid!

Yes you can. But i know there season is starting you might want to call and ask which areas you can't tour. I went back in September and we toured the entire area. Def. get the passport for $35 and tour everything on it. Hope this helps.

I believe it's year round, although switches from the one we did on wheels in the concrete track to the bobsled on ice for the winter.
