A second visit to Lalibela and I decided to venture into the mountains for a 3 day hike to the summit of Abune Yosef which is Ethiopia 4th highest mountain. I was staying at the Blue Nile Guest Lodge as recommended by my guide which is right in town. So my hike started right from my hotel. It was in October hence the surroundings were green and lush. It was very beautiful. The landscapes were a sight to behold, many hills and valleys. We also met many locals who were working in their farms or heading to the town and kids going to school. The kids were very friendly, saying hi and asking for writing pens. It might be useful to carry some with you as they are not bulky or heavy. The hike itself was moderate, we covered 50kms over the 3 days and a total elevation gain of around 2,200m. So no prior hiking experience required, just general fitness. The nights were a little chilly, so pack warmly for the evenings. We used a homestay as most mountain guest lodges had been closed due to covid (reduced tourists). Our host was a very friendly lady and her family. We ate and drank the same meals as the family and it was great. Of concern though is the open toilet situation that I found at the homestay. It may be good to ask the guide to put you up where there are established toilets as it's not common practice. You can also choose to include Asheton Maryam hike in the itinerary. If pressed on time you can do day trips to a view point or driver closer to the summit and hike up the summit, a 700m scramble from the road. I had two guides, Alex and Samuel. Very friendly guys who really were kind enough to laugh at my silly jokes and participate in fitness regimens in the wild that I was doing. I strongly recommend them when heading to Lalibela for the churches or the hikes. You can reach Alex on WhatsApp on +251912840048

We were trekking Abuna Yosef with Tazeb for 3 days on January 20. Tazeb arranged everything perfectly and according to the schedule (very nice local family that hosts us @ nights, transpiration, food, cook, porter and a storage of bananas in is bag in case you need a boost of energy :).
Tazeb is amazing person - hamble, honest, always smiling with good energy and willing to answer any question. He is highly familiar with the region, culture, local people, landscape and the animals along the trail.
I Highly recommend to contact Tazeb via WhatsApp (+251 92 022 7325). He is very responsive and very good English speaker - you won't regret it!

I did a trek with local guide Nahom Misgan. We hiked in the Highlands for 4 days and summitted on Abuna Yosef. We stayed in the local Tukals. Nahom is an excellent guide. He is so attentive and respectful. We really had a fantastic time and the price was much lower than many of the big tour companies. Contact him by phone or WhatsApp at 251 94 886 3838

I highly recommend the 3 days (2 nights) trek to Abune Yosef Mountain with Tazeb (+251 92 022 7325, available on WhatsApp) as a guide.

The trail crosses incredible highland countryside on the way to the mountain, which is beautifully covered with low-growth shrubs. There are awesome views from the peak. Nights are spent at a family's home in a village (you get your own private mud hut).

Good hearted Tazeb is a great guide - he knows the area by heart, takes care of everything - transportation, food (his co-cook is really good), porters, donkey-handlers etc., and always has a banana in his bag when you need an energy boost.

3 of us climbed Abuna Youssef with Ababa. If you have 3 spare days in Lalibela do it! Ababa might even accommodate a 2 day 1 night hike if you are an semi experienced hiker. I couldnt recommended Ababa enough. He met us the day before we started our hike a d showed us around the town, helping us with whatever we needed. He is an extremely humble and generous young man and we had everything we needed on the trip. Ababas whatsapp is +251 94 553 6496... send him a message. You won't regret it.

I was one of the friends that joined “Rama088” on the 3 day, 2 night trek to Abune Yosef (See review by “Rama088”) - I can also attest that Tazeb was an incredible guide. Tazeb ensured our comfort, safety and enjoyment of the trekking experience at all times. I would highly recommend trekking with Tazeb.

Went on a 3 day, 2 night trek to Abune Yosef with my friends - Tazeb was an incredible guide. He was prompt to respond to me via WhatsApp even with unreliable internet service. He took care of everything - got us a hotel for the night in Lalibela, set us up with a guide for a tour of the churches, coordinated all our travel around the city, and coordinated our housing and food during the trek.

When other trekking companies wouldn't allow us to do this trek because it was rainy season, Tazeb coordinated everything and it all went incredibly smoothly. He is a great guy and an incredible value. I would recommend Tazeb to anyone trying to do treks in the Lalibela area.

We did a 4 day/3 night trek up Abuna Josef and the surrounding countryside with Getachew. It was without doubt, one of the highlights of a 6 week trip backpacking in Ethiopia. If you are in Lalibela, please get in touch with him for an unforgettable experience. He can tailor trips depending on your interests and how much you want to walk each day, and for a very reasonable price compared to other treks and tours in Ethiopia. He used to work for the Highland Eco Trekking company before starting his own company a couple of years ago so really knows his stuff! On top of this he is a really lovely chilled guy to spend time with.

If you have time, I can not recommend the 4 day trek enough. Firstly the scenery is absolutely stunning. In my view it matches the Simien Mountains except it is far less busy - we did not see another tourist for the entire 4 days. We were lucky enough to see 2 Ethiopian wolves and many Gelada Monkeys.

You will also experience village life. Getachew grew up in one of the villages and knows many people who he introduced us to along the way. We also saw market day, visited a school, witnessed a funeral taking place and had a break at a local bar. We always felt very welcome and had a lot of fun talking with everyone with Getachew’s translation.

We slept with a local family for 2 nights and at a trekking hut for another night. It is basic, there is no running water or electricity and you will be sleeping on a mattress on the floor. But we always felt warm and comfortable, the food was freshly cooked and plentiful and the hospitality of the family we stayed with made for a once in a lifetime experience. Take my advice and do not miss it!
