The magnitude, precision, and rich symbolic detail of the 11 rock-hewn churches will leave you speechless, but what makes the experience even better is that the churches are alive, participating in a continuity of worship that has existed since their construction. Try to be there for a service or holiday, as you will have an unforgettable experience of transcendent wonder and joy.

While I was in Lalibela, I had an excellent guide named Mas. He grew up in Lalibela, so he has many unique and special insights and connections related to the people and places. He always knew how to be at the right places at the right time for the best views, special/unique experiences, the best lighting and opportunity for photographs, and fewer crowds. He is a wealth of knowledge of all aspects (historical, theological, architectural, archaeological, cultural, ecological, geological) of the sites we visited. He provided authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences, such as visiting a traditional homestead for traditional bread and beer and witnessing a baptism at one of the churches. He did a great job of facilitating conversations and interactions with various people, from kids to adults, to priests, bishops, and nuns. This included receiving blessings from clergy with ancient, 900-year-old crosses. Mas is also an amazing photographer and took and shared a lot of spectacular photos. He helped me navigate and get adjusted to various aspects of the culture and made sure I had an unforgettable experience. Reach out to him for special, unique, as well as less-known things to do and experience.

No words to explain this place! It is stunning!!! And a must see if you are able to. The churches are all hewn out of rocks, and we were fortunate to be there for Sunday worship!

We had a really nice time in Lalibela, the churches are fascinating, the setting in the mountains so beautiful.
Our guid Kassaye is passionate about his hometown and very wellkoming. We were luky to share the easter home cooked meal at his house, it was a great experience. We also really enjoyed the hike up a nearby mountain to see another rock-hewn chuch. We recommend his services, Kassaye Akélé speaks french and english and can be reached on Whatsapp +251 911 81 23 83 or per e-mail kassalalibelatours@gmail.com.

My partner and I spent several days in the company of Ayalew in Lalibela. He is knowledgeable and a pleasant companion and I recommend him highly. I believe Ayalew can also arrange trips to Simien Mountains and other great parts of Ethiopia. He is energetic and good at making all necessary arrangements.

We had a long drive from Simien Mountains for Christmas which actually breathtaking views for anyone who loves nature but I personally think it is too long drive over 480 km. But the driver was really great and stop every scenic point. The trip has been arranged by Eyosi including Simien mountains te service was great. Eyosi was checking up how everything was going on during the drive to Lalibela. He really can’t do enough for his clients.

While transiting two nights in Ethiopia, I was able, in an afternoon and morning, to see these old rock hewn churches on my bucket list! My highlight was seeing the churches and the Lalibelans' traditions, a glimpse into history. I booked a tour directly through a local tour agency ETT in Addis (contact Sunight), because they 1) had people on the ground who were willing to flexibly work with me (what if there was a delay with my international flight and couldn't be on the tour?) and 2) understood the CURRENT security situation on the ground - which they verified was safe. Lalibela did suffer during the conflict because of young misdirected men did kill, steal, and destroyed infrastructure in Lalibela. But this is more of a reason to visit! Mareg, a local, was my tour guide - highly recommended and knowledgeable and is part of the area and its traditions.

We had a good guide. Pricey tour but worth it. Fascinating labyrinth of tunnels and grottos dating back almost a millennium.

This is one of the best places, I have seen in my entire life. I still wonder how could that been done sometime 900 years ago? It is mesmerizing! our guide was very knowledgeable and knows a lot about Lalibela. the entrance is a little expensive but it definitely worth it. If you are planning to visit Ethiopia, Do NOT miss Lalibela!

It’s just simply an amazing place. Plus, having a good tour guide really makes the difference.

For people who complain about the price, get over it! Even if it’s a little more than you wanna pay, consider it a blessing to support the local economy, which has really been affected by the global pandemic.

These places could be so much better developed as tourist sites. But that probably won’t happen since these are still active places of worship and since the community likes to keep things the way they are. Totally understandable.
