I went to the memorial because as an ex-UN employee the events of September 1961 have always fascinated me. The site is simple and unpretentious - which befits the nature of the tragedy and of Hammarskjold himself. The normalcy and quiet of the site add...More

A short drive from Ndola, via the dual carriageway, the little spot has a lot to tell of its history.

Easy to get to if you're driving from Ndola to Kitwe and well signposted. It's the actual crash site and the museum has some interesting information. The guide was useful too.

The sevice to the public is excellent. The explanation about the history of Dag Hammarskjoeld well told. The display of information about his death and what transpired well told and is detailed. Customer service to the public very good and friendly.

The memorial itself is similar as those found everywhere. However if you are prepared to spend some time reading the boards set out in the room, the history of the Congo conflict, the crash and the Secretary General for the U.N. are detailed quite nicely.

A very tranquil place with many reminders of a significant time in history. The place is really in the middle of nowhere, so you need either your own vehicle or a guided tour.
