Roger Tory Peterson was an American naturalist, ornithologist, illustrator and educator, held to be one of the founding inspirations for the 20th-century environmental movement and created the seminal "Guide To The Birds".

This place is a tribute to the guy's work. The museum has a main gallery past the gift shop dedicated to his work as seen in the guides. They have additional gallery space of which they are currently running a photography exhibit on some local ospreys which are stunning.

They have a room with some of his specimens which I hoped would have had more information.

The place sits on 27 acres which you can hike some of it so you can enjoy the outdoors.

The place also runs a number of events throughout the year to help raise money for the institute. It is a gorgeous building and contains a large archive of this impressive man.

The setting and the building are beautiful, but the content of the Institute is sorely lacking. Aside from the well-done introductory video, there is virtually none of Roger Tory Peterson's work on display on the mostly bare walls and in the exquisite turret room. We expected a much fuller experience.

Every few months, there is a new artist's work (in the "nature art" genre) displayed. Besides that, anyone who knows of Peterson's Bird Identification Guides and his nature art will find this museum a delight. There's the history of his growing up in Jamestown plus a great many of his original art work that can be viewed up close. Really wonderful place, especially for lovers of nature.

Jamestown may be a small place, but it is the birthplace of Roger Tory Peterson, the naturalist. It is great that such a small place has a natural park with a center for kids to learn about wildlife and plants. It is also great for people wanting to teach their kids about nature, as there are trails to walk on.

If you have a Field Guide to the Birds, or any other Field Guide, you know of Roger Tory Peterson
Roger Tory Peterson grew up in Jamestown, roaming the fields and woods not far from here. Much of his works is being housed in the extensive library, along with changing exhibits and gift shop.
