In 1819, Walt Whitman was born at a farmhouse in West Hills built by his father circa 1810. The Birthplace was restored in 2001 and it is a fine example of native Long Island craftsmanship.

Our great poet was born in this house his father built in 1819 and lived here until he was four. It's lovingly painted and furnished as it would have been during that time; although, you will only see a few pieces that actually belonged to the Whitmans. There are two floors and several steps. Our young docent was exceptional. There's... More

I took my 8 year old here, we are on a trip from Seattle, had a great tour through the home and grounds, lots of information to be had but as little or as much as you need. (Perfect amount for this homeschooling family) We actually arrived just a few minutes prior to closing and I was actually worried that... More

The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site is a wonderful gem of a secret right off the beaten path. It's somewhat unfortunate how the site is surrounded by random modern development, but the very welcoming and informative staff make this totally unique site well worth the visit. Our guide (can't remember his name, a young man) was well-informed of the... More

Walt Whitman's Birthplace is hidden behind a fence across the street from the Walt Whitman Mall. Entrance to the Birthplace is on a road off Route 110. Once at the quiet Birthplace you would never know you were close to busy Rt.110. Tours are given in Whitman's home and scheduled events, lectures and a small gift shop are located in... More

Another local gem just stashed behind Rte 110 that you'd pass daily, as I did for 1.5 years when I went to college down the road 25 yrs ago.......Again, nice to see very young docents working there. The one that gave my tour wants to be a curator at a grand museum one day, I wish him luck as he... More

Tucked away off of Route 110 in Huntington Station, NY the Walt Whitman Birthplace is a well maintained, early 1800s farmhouse and museum dedicated to Walt Whitman's early years and later success. Very good docents and a detailed museum space, it was a treat to visit and learn that the spot was important enough to Whitman that he visited it... More

Nice little historical place tucked away near the mall that bears the same name. Very interesting to get all the information from the knowledgeable tour guide. Can't beat the $6 admission. Nice little gift shop as well. Worth checking out I feel.

I had arranged a group tour and everyone was delighted. We had a tour of the home, a lecture on Walt Whitman and lovely refreshments!

I didn't know anything about Walt Whitman to be perfectly honest before I came I was impressed even though I only had a half an hour I got to see a lot of helpful information. The museum has a very small footprint yet uses its space in a very attractive way that simulates one's curiosity about this extremely interesting man.... More
