I went here with my husband and two children; a 5 year old and a 2 year old. My 2 year old is very rambunctious and was not well received by the snotty lady who oversees the museum. The place is incredible and we probably would have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves if it were not for this woman following us around and asking us to make sure my 2 year old was quiet. What 2 year old boy is quiet? Everywhere we went this creep of a woman followed in tow, even when I was leaving the bathroom, there she was lurking. If she didn't work there our experience would have been great; she made it most unpleasant. What a shame! I am a teacher who would have recommended this place to others if it weren't for her. Plus we drove over an hour to go; she ruined it.

Laura Clary I have two young boys ages 2 and 4 and this is my 2nd time here. I have not been pleased with staff on either visit...I drove an hour to get to the museum and I was told my 2 year old, even with my supervision, could not go into the jr. firefighter room becuase "he might get hurt"...its certainly not as dangerous as a playground or an indoor gym ie. tumbling tykes, and with my supervision it should not be made an issue. Secondly any of the kid friendly activities such as pretending to use a firemans hose can also not be practiced by anyone under the age of three, so basically my young one had not been able to experience much in the way of any learning experience. Thirdly, there was an announcement that came on saying children should not be loud...I'm sure in a museum setting parents are doing the best they can to keep their children under control. There seems to be more staff "available" than there are visitors...they do not offer to give any helpful information about the fire trucks, and none of the seems friendly...it seems as though they are there to watch the visitors and are quick to scold if they see any food, or any touching of the trucks and again, if the kids are a little noisy. And lastly, since there is no eating or drinking allowed in the museum, it would be helpful to have maybe a small eating area away from all the trucks, or at least a picnic bench outside where visitors can eat their lunch/snack. I can truthfully say my family and I will not be returning

I am always displeased when a visitor is not happy with their visit to the Museum. While I understand your concerns, it seems from your comments that you were under the impression that this is a children’s museum. We try to make it very clear on the museum’s website and in the Museum’s orientation video that while we have activities for children, this is not a children’s museum. Therefore, there are restrictions concerning touching, eating, etc. as there are in all non-children’s museum. This is to protect the Museum’s artifacts. Most children’s museums do not have these concerns, and children are encouraged to touch everything, as there are no artifacts in many children’s museums: they are totally hands on. Your comment about having an eating area outside is a good thought. We rent a very limited part of the property the Museum is on, so the entire campus is not available to us. We do have some space that is unshaded outside, and we always thought the direct sun would keep people from using that space, but perhaps we should try a picnic table or two out there to see if visitors like you would use this space. As you probably noticed during your visit, there were seniors in the Museum reading panels and listening to audio at the same time you were here. We have many types of visitors, from firefighters to apparatus buffs, to families. Staff makes announcements only when visitors are yelling or screaming to the extent it can be heard in the next gallery: the announcement simply reminds visitors to use their inside voice inside the Museum. It is always difficult for us to balance all of the Museum’s visitors’ needs, but we do our best to do so. The Jr. Firefighter challenge exhibit was engineered for children three to ten. Unfortunately, due to the differences in children’s size and dexterity as they grow, we could not make this experience a “one size fits all” activity. When we commissioned the fabrication of this interactive, we had to pick an age range for the activity to be engineered for, to ensure this activity would be safe: we picked the widest range possible. This is the same concept used in many venues, such as amusement parks: there are some rides for older children and some rides for younger children, but all children are not allowed on all rides, for their own safety. We try our best to make it very clear on the Museum’s website and the Museum’s orientation video that we have an extremely limited amount of activities that are safe for children under three. I think you would agree that most regular museums do not have activities that are suitable for children under three. Children’s museums really cater to this age group, as well as other activities where there are no restrictions. I would welcome your thoughts on how to make this more apparent to visitors to avoid the same disappointment you experienced.

What a great place for both Young and Old. This small but charming museum packs a punch. We had a great time looking at the vast collection of fire trucks from the 1600's until now. For children there was a ton to do we especially liked the bucket brigade challenge. The staff was also very friendly and knowledgeable. A good value for the price

This is an astounding large collection of magnificent old fire engines, dating back to the 1700s! They are aesthetically beautiful. No one else was there! Any traveler to Hudson who enjoys the designs of old vehicles would be thrilled with an hour's visit to this museum. There's lots to learn about firefighting through the centuries in addition to taking pleasure in the beauty you'll encounter.

Great local museum! Who new that fire equipment was so beautiful and interesting? Kids love to dress in firemans outfits and sit in the trucks, their parents and grandparents will find the displays interesting n ad informative. Great place for a rainy afternoon when you have a houseful of guests that include some ages 3-12

We like to stop at fire museums. My husband brought a patch from our department to donate. Lots of old and very cool trucks. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Very child friendly.

I'm a history buff, not a firefighter, but I love history! This museum is well-worth a visit even if you are not a firefighter!

This was my first visit to the Museum. I was at the FASNY Home on family business and was given a tour of the museum after my meeting. I strongly recommend a visit for anyone involved with Fire/ EMS service, their friends and/or families. Great for all kids and a part of the volunteer history.

This is a great museum for families and adults of all ages. It has the history of firefighting beautifully displayed, along with vintage trucks, and firefighting gear. There are a ton of hands on activities for kids and future fire fighters. They have programs for school groups. Lots of safety tips included. Impressive gift shop with books, toys and Lego gear in the firefighter theme. We stumbled upon this museum and we're really impressed. Great find!

Fascinating for kids and adults -- we spent three hours and there was more to see. The historical write-ups are excellent -- back to the Romans -- and George Washington's chewing out of some "tourists" was priceless.
