Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family...

Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family home, studio, and estate, as an integrated environment embracing architecture, art, and landscape. Olana, a National Historic Landmark, is an icon of naturalistic landscape design, with five miles of carriage roads and a Persian-inspired house at its summit, embracing unrivaled panoramic views of the vast Hudson River Valley. Today, visitors can experience an array of activities, from meandering through the 250 acre artist designed landscape, to taking a tour of the house and surrounding landscape, to viewing the changing exhibitions both in the main house and a gallery devoted to contemporary photography. They can see a 17 minute award-winning video on the property and a permanent orientation exhibit. They can also participate in a variety of educational programs in the Wagon House Education Center, including a free backpack program that includes a variety of projects for children.

The Beauty which was created by this artist really is fascinating and well worth a look. The house itself is wonderful, however, the gorgeous fields and the spectacular views that surround it, make it even better! It's great for the whole family!

Fascinating grounds surround this Moroccan beauty. Take the short tour if you're able of the first floor.

You wouldn't expect this piece of history to be sitting on the mountainside right by the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. But it's location is probably the best view of the entire area which is of course why it was chosen in the first place. Amazing structure and eclectic art collections from an era gone by. If you are passing through,... More

The house and gardens are absolutely worth the trip. There is a short house tour that is informative - so take it if you can!

What sets Olana apart from other (also noteworthy) historical sites along the Hudson river is that it was build to live in by a visionary artist. Touring the house one gets the feeling that the people who lived there (F. Church and family) loved the house and its surroundings. For example, they used the central hallway to perform home produced... More

I went to Olana on a field trip with my kids for school. I loved it and so did the kids. The tour guides were phenomenal. The hike had magnificent views. I loved it so much, I told my parents about it and THEY went. This is definitely a photogenic place all year round!

Eccentric and eclectic Victorian extravaganza, built by one of the artists who best recognized the commercial potential of landscape painting. Fun and amazing, rather than beautiful. But the surrounding landscape that inspired Frederick Edwin Church is beautiful. We reserved the ride around the property (rather than a 5 mile hike) more than a month in advance and enjoyed it. We... More

Another example of the rich history in this area. Reserve a spot on a tour so you can see the inside of the house, which is just as awesome as the outside.

Our tour guide, Kimberly, made the history of Olana come alive through her anecdotes and encyclopedic knowledge. And every nook and cranny of the house and grounds is filled with examples of Church's vision for his home and the surrounding landscape. The hand-stenciled door panels, the tiles surrounding the fireplace mantels, the collected objects, the furniture, the layout of the... More
