The Askia Mosque is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and worth a look if you are in the area. The security situation does not facilitate free movement in this region.

At the time of writing, the Gao region is generally considered unsafe for travel, due to recent terrorist activity and kidnappings, so before travelling do check out the situation.
