About
The American Airpower Museum is Non-Profit 501C3 Aviation Museum and State Chartered Educational Foundation. A unique Museum where most of the historic Aircraft are operational and fly regularly during the spring and summer months. The Museum is located at historic Republic Airport in Farmingdale NY. The Airport established back in the 1920s by Fairchild and Grumman Aviation. Eventually the home of Seversky Aviation during the 1930s it would evolve into Republic Aviation in 1939. In 1941 Republic produced the P-47 Thunderbolt which would go on to be the most mass produced fighter of WWII with over 15,000 built. Republic would go on to build the F-84, F-105, and A-10 Fighter Aircraft all right here in Long Island NY. Today the American Airpower Museum calls one of the last three surviving Republic Hangars home.

I have a strong interest in aviation history, and I have visited many aviation museums. I really wanted to like the American Airpower Museum, but it fell a little short of my expectations. It wasn’t bad but their webpage oversells the experience a bit.
What is there is cool. You can walk right up to several of the exhibits and even get inside a few. The human stories that are included with the exhibits are a positive. They have a small collection of WWII/Cold War aircraft but it’s pretty much one hanger and some aircraft parked outside. You cannot walk to the aircraft outside without an escort and from what I could see, it wasn’t worth summoning a staff member.
The admission fee is $15/adult. For the two of us that was $30, and that total was about $10 over what it should have been. If you wanted to really take your time, you could probably spend 2-3 hours there, but most folks will max out at about 1 ½ hours, probably less.
The overall feel was that the exhibits were cobbled together. They clearly need more space and perhaps some organization. There was a noticeable lack of Republic and Grumman history at a museum that should have been overflowing with that information, considering its location. Their F-105 was being, I guess…. prepared for display? It looked like a shade tree mechanic was working on his 72 Nova in the front yard. The place could use a little leadership.
They were not offering flights on the day I was there, and I knew that ahead of my visit. A flight would have raised my cost but maybe that would have improved my opinion of the facility.
I don’t wish to be harsh, but we altered our route to catch this museum and it was a bit disappointing

We visit the Airpower Museum every year, since every year the kids understanding of the events of WWII is from an evolved perspective. They especially like crawling through some of the planes, with me too, and sitting in the cockpit chairs. It is an interactive experience. The docents are extremely friendly and very happy to share their aviation knowledge and the history of the area during the war.
Always a fun time and a great way to spend a few hours on a weekend! A must see if you have never visited. Great for teens and young children. Great place to visit with grandparents too..

The best display of American aviation on Long Island New York. Go see how a country was unified in an effort to bring down tyranny in Western Europe and the South Pacific during WW2. At the American AirPower museum you step back into time into 1930s and 40s America through the modern era and see the production line of aircraft in a way you’ve never seen before. Definitely a wonderful trip around Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Family friendly and lots to see and do.

The Clymans are truly incredible and pulled off the impossible with such a touching tribute to my late grandfather. With little notice they were able to coordinate a P51 flyby at his services in NJ that truly made the day a celebration of his life. He was a 100yr old WWII and Korean War fighter pilot who loved the P51 and all things related to aviation. He loved visiting the museum when he was alive and I know would have enjoyed his final send off. They were so kind and responsive with every detail as was the amazing pilot for the event giving us a little show above the church.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit the American AirPower Museum and take a flight on a T-6 Texan airplane. My kids purchased the flight experience for me as a gift. The only way that I can describe the flight is, Fantastic! What a wonderful experience! Everyone at the museum treated me really nice. My preflight review was done by Aiden. He explained everything that I needed to know, assisted me with my life jacket and parachute and helped get in the plane. My pilot’s name was Nick. He was great! He explained everything that we were going to do. I had mentioned that I keep my boat in the Blue Point Marina and Nick made a point of flying me over it. Nice! My wife and I also had the opportunity to see the museum while we were there. In addition to all of the old planes it has many great exhibits related to the history of military aircraft. The volunteers in the museum do a great job and make your visit a great experience. I highly recommend a visit.

Although this review is not about the museum, it is about a flight that I took on their C-47 “Second Chance” aircraft. We flew out of Owls Head Transportation Museum in Owls Head , Maine, while it was there for an air show August 5th, 2023. My father flew a C-47, the “Mary E. II”, out of Assam India while serving in the U.S. Air Corp. in 1944-1945. I wanted to experience what he saw while flying the aircraft. It was a fantastic experience for me and I couldn’t have asked for a more gracious and accommodating crew, allowing me to experience just what it takes to operate and fly this incredible aircraft. I am forever grateful to these fine people. Take a flight with them or visit their museum. You won’t regret it. They run a first class operation.

Please forgive our delay in thanking you for your kind words and encouragement to others to take our C-47D-Day Flight experience. Unfortunately, the plane has to replace an engine and we will be starting a Go Fund Me campaign to get it flying again.
Come back soon!

The volunteers are all gems - Frank was fantastic and patiently explained everything including to my three-year-old. You can climb into the nose gun of a Flying Fortress, see an A-10 Warthog up close, see amazing models, sit in several cockpits, see a cutaway radial engine and many other displays, all in a short period of time. Truly a marvellous place.

This is one of my 4 year old sons favorite places to visit. If you like World War 2 history and airplanes, then you need to go here. They have exhibits where you can go onto the planes while in the hangar or even fly in them.

This place is a true hidden gem. the amount of things to see and experience is just super. you can enter many of the airplanes and get a glimpse into the experience of a world-war II pilot/air-man. Even my kids loved it. The stuff is super helpful and they are very helpful. worth visiting more than once.

Been here several times and enjoyed selection of craft. Expensive to visit for what you get and they raise their prices for certain holidays and special events. I won't go there again because there are more options I spend my money on.

Is the museum accessible? My 93 years dad uses a walker, but maybe we should bring a wheelchair so its not to much for him. Also when are tours offered. My dad was in the navy and served on a tanker I think. He said they refueled the planes.
Written 6 July 2019
Agreed. You should have no issues entering the museum with a wheelchair. There are a few exhibits that not be accessible but your dad should be able to see most of the collection without issue.

General admission is $12 for adults. $10 for seniors, $7 for Children ages 5-10, and Free for children under 4. If you live on Long Island, check with your local library because many of them have free day passes if you have a library card.

Would my grandchildren, ages 5-8 enjoy this museum?
Written 6 May 2016
Yes absolutely, besides a fantastic history lesson even at that age, there are aircraft cockpits to play in, a flight simulator, and during the warmer months our planes are flying often on the weekends so lots to see and keep them entertained.
