Wow! This trip back through the ages was brilliant. There is loads to see and most of the explanations of what you’re viewing is provided both in French and English. It was amazing how they lived and worked but so much of what they designed is still being used in modern day technology although seriously updated of course. The principals are the same. People worked here until the 1960’s. Easy to park and easy access. The route is very well planned out and easy to follow. For 8E it is so worth a visit. !00% recommend.

Very surprising this troglodyte site, with these different caves that will make you discover the life of peasants and inhabitants of old, through their professions and lifestyles. Adjoining free parking, Award of entrance a little high especially for young children. Interesting and total discovery visit path for some exhibitions highlighted in the 23 caves open to visitors' curiosity, the progression is well studied, nothing is missing, really very complete. The small quiz game given to children very well done and easy to complete (small reward at the end).

We visited Rochemenier in August 2007 on a return trip to the Loire Valley, we found it the most incredible awe inspiring place. A real living museum. The multi-lingual owner was most charming and informative. A real must to visit. I will certainly return.

We stop there to visit a Troglodyte village with our kids (10 & 7). It was very good, educational and interesting visit for 1-2 hours. It is well preserved Troglodyte village. Staff was nice and offers us a booklet on different languages. (They have all European languages and also Russian and even Hebrew). It was nice stopover attraction.

Really interesting change from the normal Loire attractions. Less than €6 to get in and each underground room well described on the English information sheet and also on dual language signs. Lots of artefacts and old photos to see. Allow a couple of hours and then have a good lunch or coffee at the cafe / restaurant near the free car park.

In addition to touring the Troglodyte village, be sure to experience lunch at the restaurant.
The village/museum is intriguing and will be of interest to visitors of all ages.

A friend and I decided to visit this village on a whim and were glad we did. Really interesting since that the village was still used up until the 1930s. The village is large and well preserved. The French staff were very nice and they spoke on the history of the village with us for a while. Definitely a worthwhile stop on your trip in the Loire Valley.

The cave museum was very interesting for both adults and children and our kids (5&8yrs) loved it. We had never seen troglodyte caves before so it was a new experience.

This attraction was recommended to us by a family friend, we are very, very pleased he did so.
It’s a bit off the tourist path, so was incredibly cheap at €7 each, and worth every cent. My SatNav took me from Saumur via several D roads, but, it was well worth the effort.
It’s amazing to realise that these cave dwellings were in use until the 1960’s when the last family moved out, and several families used to live in the complex of caves and tunnels for many centuries prior to that. The path through the underground village is well signposted and each room has information panels in French and English.
I particularly recommend the shadows and silhouettes video that is shown in the “village hall” and the church cave, under the main town church, with a rather odd electronic horse piece of art.
A rather limited selection of drinks and snacks is available from the entrance kiosk, but there’s a very nice tea room and restaurant between the village and the parking area, so we went there after our tour.
Highly recommended if you are anywhere near Saumur or travelling through the Loire

It was a rainy damp day, and needed a bit of a break. Didnt look very inviting when we walked down the steps due to the weather, but once we entered the museum as its called, the whole place became quite fascinating. There was an English guide booklet and the displays had written explanations in both French and English. I believe you can hire a ipad type device to talk you through the various exhibits. By the end of the journey we were quite hooked about how they lived in this 'village' for want of a better word in what seems like a quarry. Excellent little gift shop which sells the local and not so local gifts.

Does this need to be booked in advance if just planning a self guided tour ?
Thanks

No, think you can just arrive and pay. It's not a big place, but well worth a visit.

Is it possible to visit if you don't have a car? We will probably be based in Tours.
Written 18 March 2018
You'll need some type of transportation; perhaps a bus. Enjoy Tours, it's a very interesting town to walk around.
