Bibracte is the name of the former capital of a powerful Gaulish people. The site of the Gaulish town occupies one of the highest summits in the Morvan mountain range, Mont Beuvray, in the Burgundy Region of France. Nowadays, Bibracte is a benchmark site for the study of Celtic civilisation. Bibracte Museum stands on the slopes of Mount Beuvray. In a very contemporary architectural setting, the permanent exhibits offer a fascinating account of Celtic civilisation through its fortified towns. Numerous models, audiovisual presentations, and reconstructions make the museum very attractive and enable you to get right to the heart of the everyday lives of our ancestors. You will thus discover the social organisation, arts and crafts, agriculture, trade, religion, art and culture of peoples who were much less barbaric than Caesar wanted us to believe...

Bibracte was an ancient gallo-roman village / town in the early days, later on the site was used by a monestry. The outdoor archeological site shows different excavation sites spread over a nice park, at each site an information board explains what you see and...More

I was unprepared for the extent of the archaeological and historical significance of this site, given its place in French and Gallic Roman history. Visiting in summer, we were able to drive around the area (as the place is rather extensive for elderly persons to...More

You may wonder why something astounding only rates 4 stars, and I did debate over that. But I found that the revamped museum had lost some of its charm for me; I like to spend ages looking at lots of things under glass, and the...More

Museum is good, archeological site is very large, sometimes steep and can be visited by car if you have small kids (or are unfit). For small children a bit too boring. But for the age and the amount and quality of remains, it is well...More

You start at the museum, which is very well laid out, and has some very interesting facts about the area. The self-guided tour is very in-depth and well-done. It's not a cluttered museum, and the shapes and lines lend it a very open, minimalist air....More

Between the site itself and the museum, and taking into account the drive to get here, you should allow the whole day to do this place justice. This site wasn't loaded in our GPS as a position of interest, so we had to load in...More
