I’m a fan of Edgar Allan Poe and was excited to visit his home. It’s small and unassuming, but the Poe family seemed to enjoy living here, although his wife died of tuberculosis in this house. Entrance is only $5, and you can also dial in to an audio tour from your phone. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and there are subway stations nearby.

Small, unassuming cottage but very interesting tour with our knowledgeable guide Roger. Easy to get to via 4 or D subway and well worth the trip if you’re a Poe fan. You do need to reserve a time to visit via phone or email, both on the website.

Ignore the review that says this is in a “bad area,” btw. It’s a neighborhood with bodegas and shops - not fancy, very diverse, but perfectly safe. Husband and I are obvious tourists, both Anglo, it was fine.

The cottage is small. It does not have a lot of the poet's things and furniture but I had always wanted to visit. I took an eleven year old and she loved it. The bed in one of the rooms is the actual bed that his wife/cousin died in. As morbid as it sounds we both thought that was pretty cool. A 17 minute video of the history of the area, the cottage and the poet is shown. There are souvenirs to buy, you can take pictures with a cut out of Poe, view the small rooms and get lost in a time past. It is a quick tour. A small cottage, but informative. It cost $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.

For Poe fans, this cottage in the once bucolic Bronx is a can't miss destination. The Bronx Historical Society has done an excellent job maintaining the site in a dignified yet accessible manner, and the docent on a recent visit was terrific - enthusiastic and knowledgeable enough about Poe to tailor his explanations for different audiences. That said, there isn't a lot to see unless one is an architectural historian or interested in period furnishings, of which there isn't a lot. The real experience here is being in the same wooden cottage as Poe during a particularly sad yet productive period of his life. It's not a "fun" place to bring the kids unless they are Poe enthusiasts, too. The admission fee is inexpensive ($5) and it's doubtful you will spend more than 30 minutes here.

The neighborhood is relatively safe, and the site is easy to find from the subway (the little white cottage on a hill sticks out). A visit to Poe Cottage can be combined with a trip to nearby Fordham University, where Poe often hung out according to a video running on a constant loop in the cottage, or the Botanical Gardens, a short bus ride away. Sometimes an art exhibit can be found in the Poe Park visitor center next door, which features 21st century restrooms. Lots of affordable food options on nearby Grand Concourse, itself an architectural destination.

I loved visiting this cottage in the Bronx. It was easy to get to via subway from Manhattan. As other reviews have stated, it's a short tour because it's a small house, so best to plan around a full day in the Bronx (there's a TON to do in the area--I went to Woodlawn Cemetery after). The tour was very informative. Dan M., the tour guide, was friendly and enthusiastic about Poe and the house. It's AMAZING to see where Poe wrote some of his works (two of my favorites: "Cask of Amontillado" and "Annabel Lee")!

My advice: take cash for tour and souvenir purchases.

Also, I felt safe in the area (I'm a SWF).

This home has a guided tour with a 20 minute film. A must see if you love Edgar Allan Poe and want to know him better. There is no handicap access and I don't recommend it for older folks that have mobility issues. Parents of small children should not go(unless they are well behaved) due to the antiques as they are not allowed to touch them.

FYI-Bring cash for admission and to buy souvenirs in the gift shop!

...with the previous 3 reviews. "Not much to see..." - sure, it's not the Metropolitan Museum or MOMA but it is the only house museum in New York City where you can get an idea of how a relatively poor family would have lived in the mid-1800s. It is also the place where one of America's greatest authors lived his final years and produced some of his most important work. Be sure to time your visit on a weekend during opening hours (Sat 10-4, Sun 1-5).

If you are not interested in Edgar Allan Poe or in historic houses then I agree about combining your visit with one to the Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, Little Italy in the Bronx or maybe Woodlawn Cemetery.

And, Joe, please don't scare people - it's really not a dangerous neighborhood.

Yesterday Sunday, November 3,2019 as I wandered weak and weary, I happened upon the Edgar Allen Poe Cottage on Kingsbridge Road where the famous poet and storyteller lived with his wife Virginia and her Mother in law. Being a self admitted history dork, I was thrilled to see a well preserved example of life in the Bronx when it was considered "the country!" I was greeted by the cordial and extremely knowledgeable caretaker/Tour Guide and host a one Mr. Glen Martinez. He showed me around the tiny cottage and took me through the time that the Poe's were in residence in the Bronx. The house is tiny, but through Glen's expert stort telling,I felt that I could actually picture Poe writing at the small table in the parlor while Virgina was in her bed room off the parlor slowly dying of the disease that finally took her life- Tuberculosis. The cottage is a must see for anyone who loves 18th century literature and NYC history. Glen presents the stories with such authority, you would think that he was a witness to this particular part of history. Do yourself a favor and visit the Poe Cottage. If Glen isn't there or out to lunch, sit down on the porch and wait for him to return!

We stopped by the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage on a Saturday morning and were a bit concerned at first that it may not be open. Upon closer inspection, the area is under a bit of construction. Don’t let the size of this little cottage fool you, it is a major piece of Poe history. It was his last known residence and the location where he lost his beloved wife to tuberculosis. Her actual deathbed is one of the pieces original to the cottage. We’ve been to both the Baltimore and Philadelphia Poe locations and found the docent here far more knowledgeable and entertaining than the others. Interesting, educational and informative and for a $5 donation.... can’t say that about many locations. Pay the cottage a visit and help keep Poe’s memory alive.
