Everyone travelling through south-central New Mexico knows of the well-advertised Mescalero Apache Casino, "Inn of the Mountain Gods," with its associated beautiful man-made lake. But until this trip I was unaware that just a handful of miles therefrom there's an equally picturesque lake, also man-made, that is the property of the City of Ruidoso, NM. Grindstone Lake is off the... More

In a rural area just past the entrance to the Inn of the Mountain Gods. Not as scenic as the lake at the aforementioned Inn/Casino, but a trusted local said that's where he liked to fish.

Visited the lake on a weekday and it was gorgeous. The place was very peaceful with only a few hikers in the area. The lake is man made but still nice. Trails are well marked and easy to find. There is a general map in the entrance so you can choose how much you want to hike and the difficulty... More

We enjoyed geocaching and hiking around the lake. We saw a few fisherman out and about on the shores - not sure if they were catching any - but the place sure is quiet and beautiful otherwise!

Nice hike 2.4 miles around the reservoir. lots of people fishing, birthday parties occurring at picnic areas. Little hard at the end if you want to make the full loop around the dam you have to go down then back up. Very easy trail I think it's called Fishermens.

There isn't anything there. It is a clean area to fish or something. Other people had brought stuff for cooking out. It looked like there were hiking trails near it, but we didn't do that.

FREE ! The hike down to the lake is a bit rigorous though, and not much to do there except fish - which must be good because there were lots of people fishing there. There are picnic tables (although not with a view of the lake -- they are all down the road at the discus golf - which was... More

I traveled to this lake while staying in Ruidoso early this summer. Not only do they offer fishing and other water based activities, but they have plenty of hiking and biking trails as well, which was the reason I went. The trails have lots of pretty scenery to offer and can be quite the workout! I took my mountain bike... More
