This is the tallest mountain in New Mexico. It is 3 miles from my house so I get to see it every day. The first snow of the season shows up on Wheeler. Hikers and fisherman love... read more

This was a nice hike/climb. 4 miles up, 4 miles back down..The first 2 miles not to bad, you can stop at Williams lake to rest. At the lake area you make the trail switch to go up to the peak.. 1st mile is through the forest, not to bad on the elevation, but about the last mile it comes... More

This is the tallest mountain in New Mexico. It is 3 miles from my house so I get to see it every day. The first snow of the season shows up on Wheeler. Hikers and fisherman love Wheeler. You can't ride ATV on the mountain, but the hiking trails you can find one for everyone. I was there over Labor... More

Was beautiful! Need a 4 wheel drive to get there! Worth the trip. Saw wildlife and was very peaceful.

The hike to Wheeler Peak is magnificent. The first part of the hike I enjoyed the beauty of life, second part only felt the pain, third part hated life and last part circled around to enjoying the beauty again. I would do it all over again. I like the shorter hike (4 miles, trail #91) more than the longer (8... More

WHEELER PEAK FROM RED RIVER VIA TRAIL #91 (SUMMER 2013) 2 years ago (August 2013) we hiked to Wheeler Peak from Red River via Trail #91. It was an 8 mile hike that was spectacular and very difficult. My children ages 22 and 18 at the time, did well. I was 53 at the time and the last 1 and... More

My 27-year-old son and I started from the East Fork of the Red River and backpacked our way to the top of Wheeler Peak. We had an amazing trip that was freed up from the usual vagaries of July/August stormy weather (your results will probably vary). When we reached the top, at a meaty 13,161 feet above sea level, my... More

Moderate trail, good beginner trip for us riders. On the trail to Cabresto Lake we saw a bear. Fishing appeared to be popular.

Very interesting. Ride to the top of the lift during the summer and check it out. The restaurant up there is lousy but the view is fabulous

WOW this was the biggest workout I've ever had! I haven't had much experience with hiking, and with the whole family, this turned into probably an 8-9 hour hike. Definitely not easy, like one of the locals told my parents. I was so glad I kept on and made it to the top, but honestly, if I had known ahead... More
