Gaya & Sunil’s travels
On Wednesday, we decided to take a short day trip. After seeing Soda Dam, we n continued on 4 till we got to BattleShip Rock. Here we parked at the trail head, paid $5 and decided to hike for an hour before turning back. This was a very nice trailhead with a stream running through it, and there were several camping sites (below the trail head). This hike was terrific; very good gravel trail, steady climb up and as you climb the trail gets broader and the land opens up to where you’re walking through a forest. It really was wonderful. Along the way Gaya saw two ballet shoes neatly placed on a rock – interesting what you see and where! This hike was 3.49 miles round trip, 781 feet elevation. We turned around at the point where the trail started going downhill. This whole experience was wonderful. After the hike we ate the lunch that Gaya had packed sitting on a bench in the sun.
This is well worth a visit, and the drive to get there is quite nice. From Battleship Rock, going north was a great drive and we saw Bandelier and White Rock Overlook, both worth it and then some.

My husband and I went to Battleship Rock on a Friday morning. I read that the parking lot fills up quickly so we did not want to miss out. We arrived at 9 am. The picnic area parking lot (near the YMCA camp) and day hiking parking lot (just off Hwy NM-4) we nearly empty. Battleship Rock has a few trails around it, lots of picnic tables, pit restrooms and some small bridges over the Jemez River and San Antonio River. There is a US forest fee of $5 per vehicle and is payable at the self-pay box. We enjoyed about 30 minutes walking around the area.

We parked here to hike to the Mcauley hot springs- it was a steep trail in some spots, but relatively easy. Beautiful scenery & non crowded pools invite you to take a soak & rest your tired feet.
Battleship is very crowded on weekends, so any week day is better for less crowds.
Love these Mountains!

Battleship rock is a huge rock formation that looks like a ship. When you drive into the very accessible site their are picnic sites. (No overnight camping) The Jemez river running through the rocks is wonderful. Children love to play along the river but be careful as the water is quite fast through here. Don't miss this when driving through the Jemez mountains.

Great hike up the trail from the parking lot. You can go to the top for the view or continue on to the Springs for a dip

The rock formation was really beautiful but it was difficult to tell what was part of the BSR park or the YMCA located next to it.
There were locals there fishing and it felt like you were intruding so we didn’t get to close to the water.
I would recommend if you visit , don’t go on the weekend, too many people, no parking and just weird vibes.

You can see battleship rock from the road and its massive. We couldn't get parking in this area, so we went and parked at the picnic area immediately past it. We hiked about 100 yards (easy hike) and were in a stream. Had a great picnic lunch and cooled off! The kids loved it! Be careful the rocks can be slippery. If you move further to the north past a campground-about a 10 minute easy hike on a trail-you run into a great waterfall. Awesome photo op and the kids loved splashing there too!

On our return from the hike to the falls we stopped at battleship rock. I am sad to say that we parked on top and walked the 20 steps down to the stream (which would have probably been easier if my legs were not in pain from the hike). The stream water was cold, the pictures were lovely. I explored the area more and was able to walk almost right up to the base of the rock. The angle up pictures were awesome. The bathrooms were open and clean. There was several different areas for picnicking.

We visited while exploring the scenic byway and Jemez Mountains. This interesting rock may or may not remind you of a battleship but it is a local natural attraction . most tourists stop here for photos.

If you're driving through Jemez, definitely pull over and stop here. You won't regret it. I read about this place and was thinking, "Eh. It's a rock, whatever. I'll snap a photo while driving past at 70mph." But our friends convinced us to pullover, and once you pass through the pines and park.. Step out of your car and just inhale all of that beautiful, clean air. There are pretty bridges over gorgeous river rocks here, with the sunlight just creeping in through the trees. Such a beautiful sight. The idea of some kind of memorable moment that I wanted forever captured in a photo of the one I love and I in this place crept into mind. And then our currently engaged (now newlywed) friend said it. Engagement photos. NO! But I want my photos taken here! :( Not even my inner brat could ruin this moment for me. Thankfully, they flew to my hometown of San Francisco for their photos, ha.. So I can still have mine taken here. Ahhhhh. So beautiful.
