You wouldn't want to try to hike across this dizzying jumble of shiny black rock, but you can appreciate it from various overlooks, including some with picnic tables. In the summer, be sure to go early. This lava flow can get blazingly hot by mid-day.

I never knew this place was here until I took the family on a road trip and realized the valley of fire was an old lava flow. absolutely fascinating! We pulled over to enjoy the stretch, and check the place out. The kids were amazed and really enjoyed being able to touch and see the lava patterns.

To think: volcanos ruling the earth--and we can still see the aftermath! Place is awesome--long trails through the lava fields, lots of wildlife and fauna. Saw collared lizards who stopped for pictures and then continued on. The guys in the visitor center were cool too. We love "quick stops" and this was one for us with cool pics for the... More

Nice stop on the way to White Sands from up north. We had lunch under the pavilion and spent a few minutes taking in the lave fields and use the restroom.

This easy and relatively short trail is well constructed and maintained. It gives a visitor an in-depth view of the lava fields, along with beautiful plants, birds and other wildlife. It is located inside the campground, which is a lovely place to park overnight-- quiet, remote, dark skies, and reasonably priced with nice bathhouses.

The Valley of Fires is an interesting place to spend a couple of hours exploring as it is so different to anywhere else you are likely to visit. The lava flows were apparently created in relatively modern times of only a couple of thousand years ago with the lava seeping out from below the earth over a 30 year period.... More

We were looking for a place to camp and this came up on our Garmin. Campsites and bathrooms were great. We got in late, so we had no idea of what this place was about. On our way out the next morning, we stopped had the headquarters to find out and ended up taking a hiking trail through the lava... More
