We went there twice. First to be just in time to catch the end of the local festival. Next day we saw a blessing of monks ceremony. The temple is small to compare with other temples but it looks very authentic.

One of the Oldest Nyingmapa Temples in Bhutan

The Tamzhing Lhakhang/temple located opposite to Kurjey Monastery along the Bumthang river is one of the most historically, spiritually and culturally significant monasteries in Bhutan. Presently the temple serves as a place of daily worship for the community and many religious ceremonies are held regularly. The 3 days Tamzhing Phala Choedpa is held every year in the Autumn season and is a popular Festival amongst both the locals and visiting tourists.

Tamzhing is one of the oldest Nyingmapa temple in the world built in 1501 by Terton Pema Lingpa, the great ‘treasure discoverer.’ Nyingmapa is the oldest of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism beginning with Guru Padmasambhava / Guru Rinpoche himself. In the 8th Century, Guru Rinpoche prophesied the birth of Pema Lingpa and he is one of the 5 great treasure discoverers. Treasure here means religious scrolls and teachings hidden by Guru Rinpoche to be discovered along the centuries and these treasures would further revitalize and propagate Buddhism.

Tamzhing Lhakhang houses one of the oldest statue of Guru Rinpoche built by Pema Lingpa and the main essence of the statue is another statue of Dorji Sempa / Vajrasattava which is a treasure Pema Lingpa discovered from the Mebar Tsho/Burning Lake located in Tang valley in Bumthang.

Another unique feature of the Tamzhing is a heavy iron net made and blessed by Pema Lingpa and it is believed that our sins will washed off if we can carry the iron net and circumambulate the temple three times.

Very fascinating with the wall painting which was 500 years old. Very remote and peaceful. We were the only tourists and took our time to understand the rich history.

Walked the temple

A very simple temple but quite interesting as it is a key site surrounding the development off early Buddhism in Bhutan and its role in the unification of Bhutan's various ancient kingdoms. Very simple and plain in comparison to many of the more renown temple and monastic sites in Bhutan.

The walk with the chain mail around the temple is well worth it--It also is somewhat a spiritual awakening if you take it seriously and pray as you do the walk--the 500 year old murals are inspiring and the bee cluster you see on a corner of a building in the courtyard that happens every spring/summer is amazing--It was about 30 inches by 30 inches containing tens of thousands of bees--A true natural occurrence that the monks protect--

Not well visited but should definetly be on your list of sites to see if in Bhutan

This is the site/temple built in honour of the great terton Pema Lingpa around 15th century. From his childhood, he was very sharp minded and very good at any kind of artwork. One of his work as a black smith is at display in this temple. It is believed that, whosoever caries this iron chain scarf on his/her back and go around the main shrine three times, he/she will be cleansed of all defilement's accumulated in one lifetime. Every tourist's and locals alike does this on every visit.

A great Budhist temple to visit.

A must visit in Bhumthang. This temple has a lot of traditions associated with it. You can carry a iron heavy metal jacket and run around inside the temple.Inside the temple is very beautiful and they have tried their best to maintain the temple with great difficulty. But the building is old and you can see that slowly it is beginning to crumple. You might be able to see a monk sitting in meditation.

Less visited temple

This temple is low and long, unlike the taller ones you usually see. Go inside to see the old murals which are 500 years old. You are not allowed to photograph the murals.

Tamshing Lhakhang, founded at the beginning of the 16th century by Saint Pema Lingpa, is a charming temple full of flower along the monks quarters. the wall paintings include his portrait and are amongst the earliest in the country. The core missions of Tamshing are teaching the Dharma, performing religious services for the community and educating the young monks under its care. Since Tamshing is not government supported, it faces increasing challenges posed by supporting 95 monks while maintaining the ancient physical structures. Currently the monastery runs at a loss. So be generous in your donaton
