Hon Thom is a private island of the Sun World group, a Disney like company operating several amusement parks all over Vietnam.
You reach the island with the longest cable car starting from Sunset village (likewise Sun World's). Cable car ride is spectacular, probably the best in the world (read that review).
Every cable car ticket includes entry to Water (theme) park with waves pool, waterslides, roller coaster, private beach,...
Waterpark is almost empty. NO waiting lines for any rides, including the most popular ones. You can go up and down, again and again as many times you want without any wait.
If water (theme) park is not your cup of tea, have in mind they have a gorgeous beach beneath palms, with sunbeds included in the price, so it would be unreasonable paying the cable car ticket only going there and back. Take the towels from your hotel or you can rent them here.
The only drawback on the beach is that to the right are massive constructions going on. Probably they're expanding the park and building the resort.

Cable car from mainland to island is fantastic. Incredible views and very impressive. If you are into water theme parks then you will have fun here but otherwise do a round trip on the cable car (15mins each way). The theme park is almost identical to Jamberoo Recreation Park south of Sydney Australia. Definitely a fun day for the kids. Waterpark entry included in cable car ticket.
The main beach closest to water theme park is not impressive. Heavily regulated by rope buoys dictating where you can swim which is the size of a postage stamp. Water quality not great. If you attempt to swim beyond the rope you will be directed back by the lifeguard. You can use the free kayaks but again you are restricted to another very small roped off area.
Zero opportunity for snorkelling as you can not walk up the beach to a potential reef as it is blocked off and manned by security. The only opportunity for snorkelling is to take a boat from the pier at the main beach on an organised very overpriced tour.
There is also hotel construction going on directly on the beach so noisy and not a place to relax.
If you are looking for snorkelling and beach opportunities go elsewhere.

We booked the cable car ride on the 2nd of January not really knowing that the water park had only just opened.
The cable car ride in itself was one of the most incredible rides I’ve been on with breathtaking views of the islands and ocean.
You will leave from a fake Vegas style Italian village and arrive to a Jurassic park inspired tropical paradise (albeit resin coated and playing a loud repetitive Disney movie soundtrack)
The gardens are great and spacious with beautiful fish ponds.
Just behind the toilet block the jcb’s are continuing to rip down the jungle!
The water park was incredible, again loud Disney movie soundtrack made you feel you were in the Jurassic park sequel !!!
Lots of great rides and no queue....super.
The real negative was that the cable car was closed for maintenance between 12-1.30, only after passing the many retail concessions do you realise that you are trapped and unable to leave the island at lunchtime!!!!!!!! Maintenance? Really? Disgusting entrapment of people at peak times making them spend yet more money in food and drinks!
My overall experience of Phu Quok island is negative, leaving me questioning the sustainability of all this new development.
Off to the north of the island now for some peace and quiet😞

Water park was the highlight of the vacation according to our kids (age 10 & 13). The cable car was cool but if you’re afraid of heights it is a nerve biting experience. The water park opened only two months ago so everything was modern and clean and no crowds (we might have been lucky as the Coronavirus rumours might have slowed tourism down a bit). A lot of fun water slides and as long as you are taller then 130 cm you can go on all the slides. Our kids had a blast (and so did we). A lot of life guards on duty and a big area for sunbathing / relaxing between the rides. Water park is just a few min walk from the cable car.
Bring a lot of sunscreen and a shirt/ sun shirt to wear on the rides.
Payment system (you load cash to a park bracelet) was not perfect but I’m sure they will solve that in some time.
And yes, I do agree that the island charm / authenticity of the island disappeared with the heavy investments being made in the cable car / fun park but as a park it was awesome.

This place is horrible. Like the worst of Disney with the worst of Asia.

The cablecar ride is amazing, so I’d recommend that you do that, grab a cold drink and then head back again. Exit through the gift shop...

And never come back.

The cable car ride was great,
The water park wasn’t.
On my 3rd ride,(on the green ‘Twister’), in the middle of the slide I was spun over by the centrifugal force , and smashed headfirst onto the plastic base of the plastic tube I was traveling through. I was concussed but fortunately not injured beyond that. The staff offered to take me to their medical Centre, I declined and was grateful I wasn’t left disabled or dead.
I’m 1.95m tall and weigh 100kg, maybe the water park is geared for far eastern sized people, but if so I feel they should have warned of the danger to taller people.
Myself and family left straight after the accident, to recover back at our hotel.

Visiting this island during the Vietnamese New Year. It was hard to get the cable car because so many people wanted to see the island. Cable car is amazing with view of the city and other islands. Hon Thom has lot of activities for families and children. Water park and the beach itself. Good for picnics too.

A beautiful island with a wonderful beach, a large water park, several restaurants and almost always good weather. You can get here in two ways - by boat and by cable car. Most choose the second path. You can arrive by cable car and leave by boat. The beach is clean, with a slight slope, and is well suited for swimming. There are enough places to eat on the island. The prices are, surprisingly, quite affordable.

Firstly, don't show up at 12 for the cable car...it shuts down for 1.5 hours for lunch. The ride items is nice.

Unfortunately the island itself is still under construction and there was little to do unless you are into lying on a beach all day or water based activities. The title pond, simply has 2 turtle statues.

As with many them parks, the food was ordinary, overpriced and the service was slow.

It is only the wonderful views from the cable car that redeems this, but is it worth 2-4 hours....I will let others judge

The cable car trip to Hon Thom was very impressive and the 360 degree views were breathtaking! We weren’t really sure what to expect when we arrived, but after the short buggy ride we were pleasantly surprised by the nicest (and cleanest) beach we have seen since our time in Vietnam. The only small thing we didn’t really love was that you had to wear life vests in the water, even in the shallows. This place is definately under major construction and looks like it will be amazing when complete. Just hope the beach doesn’t suffer too much with all the tourism it will bring in like so many others have.
