You can visit part of the museum for free, but the all in ticket is very cheap. There are three sites which exhibit furniture and artefacts of the early times of colonisation. The exhibition on slavery is interesting too. Well worth a visit.

The museum starts with a walk around the old buildings for horses, saddle makers, shoe makers etc, some old medical equipment. A bit interesting although I believe that the most interesting part is the room with texts about slavery and another room about the Boer War(s). A fine museum to spend and hour in if you are in town, but... More

Not much time but appreciated the architecture & the history to be had. Receptionist explained in great detail which was good. Would've liked more time but that's our problem

We had been to Swellendam a couple of times before, but determined to see more of it this trip. Saw the museum listed on a Best Museums list somewhere so gave it a go. Wow! What a find! Spent several hours on a sweltering hot day absorbing all the info and seeing all the various buildings and rooms in this... More

This museum complex in Swellendam really puts the history of the town and surrounding area in perspective. It is informative and insightful without being didactic. Highly recommended

The drostdy and the surrounding buildings form a definite must-see when you are in Swellendam: Together, you will be able to gain an insight as to how the governor lived as well as how food was grown (own garden), wagons were built (blacksmith) etc. The drostdy is built in the traditional Cape-Dutch style.
