Very well presented museum spread over a fairly large area, I was expecting a quick visit but we spent a couple of hours there learning about the history. I'd definitely recommend speaking to the staff, they are very knowledgeable especially the lady in the main building who I asked about the peach stone flooring and she showed us the kitchen... More

Came here between the rain showers and really enjoyed all the exhibits spread over several buildings. Excellent value for money. The carpenter/turner was very interesting to talk to. Gives a good history of the area with interesting exhibits from various eras. Tea/coffee shop is worth a visit too - great coffee.

Good introduction to early life in Swellendam. Some buildings original, some reconstructed. Some buildings dedicated to specific trades like shoe making or coopering. Signing quite good. Helpful staff.

This museum comprises several very attractive old buildings on two sides of the street. It is very cheap to enter (just 25 Rand) and you take a self-guided walk through it. There are numerous interesting rooms which have recreated the past and provide a lot of helpful information on the history of the Cape. There is an area of recreations... More

We've been trying to figure out what South Africa is all about. Here is the best history museum I could every imagine. we spent 2 hours here going from building to building. like Greenfield Village in Detroit MI, but without the hordes of people!

We enjoyed an afternoon wandering around the museum with its wide range of exhibits both on local history and the buildings themselves. The exhibits remind you of some of the harsh events in the history of this part of South Africa . The staff, volunteers I'd assume, are enthusiastic and well informed. The cafe does good coffee too!

25 rand for an unforgettable experience. If it is the only thing that you do in Swellendam then this you must do.
