About
Vergelegen - no ordinary Estate. Founded on 1 February 1700, Vergelegen (meaning "situated far away"), has been under the ownership of some of the world's great explorers and visionaries, each of whom, in their own way, have helped shape Vergelegen to what it is today: a world-class Estate. With its world renowned handcrafted wines, history spanning over 300 years, heritage, exquisite gardens and refined cuisine, it comes as no surprise that Vergelegen continues to be the choice of the discerning visitor seeking a total sensory experience. For this reason, the Estate has borne witness to many visits of heads of state and celebrities from all over the world. Think of Vergelegen to spend quality time on your own, with your family and friends or business associates - wine tasting centre and cellar tours, Camphors at Vergelegen Signature Restaurant, Stables at Vergelegen Bistro Restaurant and the Picnic, are only a few of a myriad of enjoyable activities at Vergelegen. We invite you to experience the world of Vergelegen first-hand.

- Andy CKingswinford, United Kingdom476 contributionsCracking wine, lovely estateI’ve had a great wine from here before but never visited the actual wine estate. Lovely grounds, building and staff. Very friendly wine assistant but didn’t offer food with wine tasting. I asked and yes it was available so had some charcuterie to sample the wine. Bought a couple of their top class V range.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 October 2023
- Jurgen BBrussels, Belgium2,869 contributionsGreat, but we expected morePerhaps we expected too much after all those rave reviews and being the only wine estate we visited, but we were underwhelmed. Anyway: in absolute: we loved it! The gardens, the restaurant and the wine tasting, although the ones we tried weren't exactly my - well - my cup of tea.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 November 2023
- SafariholicHorsham, United Kingdom2,141 contributionsA Quality Wine Tasting experienceJust visited for a few hours as a Wine Tour, from our base - the Erinvale Estate & Spa, so walkable. What can I say - a beautiful day, delightful spot on their Terrace overlooking the Gardens, great selection of 6 Wines to sample. What was there not to like ? Do not recall the price, but do remember it was not cheap - nor by the same token, did we feel stung.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 December 2023

The Rose Terrace is a great spot for breakfast or lunch and the waiters were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Cafe Fleur was a nice stop as well.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 January 2024
- allmylife150 contributionsStunning - worth a visitA return visit that did not disappoint. A stunning location. The food was excellent and my daughter's "special" of a non cream based seafood pasta was delightful. Reasonable prices. The afternoon was spent wandering the spacious and beautiful grounds, complemented by the views of the mountains. We will most certainly returnVisited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 January 2024
- CriticDubai, United Arab Emirates127 contributionsStunning gardens but don't go there to taste wine!I can highly recommend Vergelegen Estate as its a beautiful estate with wonderful gardens and extremely well maintained. However don't expect to go there to taste outstanding wines as this estate is really renewed for its gardens (not its wines). However it is definitely worth the visit and a place to spent a couple of hours wondering the gardens. The next door Morgenster is the place to be if you want to taste some (great) wines!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 February 2024
- EllenChrOslo, Norway2,607 contributionsNice place to visiteA very beautiful place with lovely Gardens and charming old buildings. We tried their wine tasting - they had several options. A good deal it was, and the setting is so nice. There are several cafes and restaurants but we didn’t try any og them.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2024

You can wander in the beautiful gardens, visit the main building and library with a lot of historical information. 2 restaurants are available to enjoy a drink or a meal. Only thing missing was information about the vineyard, grapes and wines.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024

The Rose Terrace was outstanding, and the cakes were delicious. The Pop-up restaurant Cafe Fleur now closed served delicious food. - Susan S430 contributionsBeautiful estate!Tammy is absolutely adorable! So suited for her position to host guests as they taste through the wines. We had been here before back in 2015, and the estate is just as beautiful as ever. The wines are really good, especially when you have a very knowledgable host and one with such enthusiasm for their job. Love that beautiful smile Tammy and thank you for a memorable visit! Be sure to book lunch at Stables Restaurant as well. The food is outstanding as well as the service.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2024

- and of course it was to late for a tasting this day, we came unannounced. Well, we learnt something new and this will never happen again!
Now we know, In the future you have to make bookings by email or phone, preferably a few days in advance.
As a start you have to find the official web side of the vineyard / -estate, than you have to find the different offers for wine tasting with / without a cellar tour and you have to make a booking for a lunch if you like and in the end there is a heritage garden tour. There are also a lot of different fees too, entrance, cellar tour, garden tour ++
If you don't want to enjoy a lunch in the restaurant, well you can order a picnic basket for a lot of money!
Well, there are two other possibilities; book a wine tasting tour with a bus company or buy yourself a very good bottle of wine that you are interested in, - in a super market with a good matching cheese baquette. Remember disposable glasses ! Find you a good place along the beach or up in the mountains :)
Have a nice day, whatever you choose! You also have to remember that it is dangerous with alcohol and driving!
(our trip is some years ago now and we enjoyed our bottle of wine on The Top of the Ritz!) :)

Vergelegen was the first wine estate we visited in South Africa. It was a convenient stop for us on our way from the Cape Town airport to Hermanus. We had made reservations (essential) at the Stables Restaurant. We had hoped for an outdoor table but there were rain showers on and off all day so they put us inside in a spot with great views of the estate. The menu is relatively limited but there are plenty of choices for kids and vegetarians. Of course, it's best to enjoy a glass of wine over lunch and there were a few that were on special. I had the vegetarian burger which is good but not great and my son did not like his cheese pizza (sauce was too sweet). Our son was able to run and play outside while we ate and relaxed. After our meal, we walked around the estate which is vast. We visited the estate house which is now an interesting little museum and definitely worth a visit. So many historic moments have taken place there over the estate's very long history. The old camphor trees are indeed beautiful, even on a dreary day. Our son particularly enjoyed the maze made out of grape vines. We would have loved to have spent more time just walking about if the weather had been more cooperative. My husband and I did a wine tasting just before we left. I really liked the Sauvignon Blanc Reserve and the GVB red. V is their world famous wine but at about $100 a bottle, we settled for more affordable (and still tasty) options!

Not only is the surrounding landscape of mountains, gardens and vineyards exquisite, but the food at this wine estate’s restaurant is beyond expectations. I recommend the mussels, pork belly or risotto with the Vergelegen Chardonnay. Excellent service rounds off a great all-round dining experience. After your meal, take time to wander the beautiful historical grounds. Child-friendly...

Wow what an incredible experience being hosted by Wayne Coetzer the General Manager and a master of hospitality - from our arrival to the vineyards to meeting the wonderful winemaker and then to experience the superb Camphors Restaurant and the gourmet delights from Michael Cook the world class chef who specializes in delicious combinations of taste and texture.... A more casual dining option is in the Stables Bistro or a wonderful picnic in the camphor tree forest... Also scrumptious teas soon to be avaliable in the Rose Terrace next to the most colourful and picturesque rose garden.. VERGELEGEN has something for everyone and i cannot recommend it highly enough...

Today’s visit to Vergelegen Wine Estate, Somerset West in the Western Cape surpassed all expectation.
Wayne Coetzer, newly appointed Managing Director set the tone of warmth and hospitality. Duhnique Hendriks inspired us as she led us on a tour through the beautiful gardens introducing us to the camphor forest, rose and other gardens while enlightening us with snippets of history starting with the establishment of the farm by Willem Adriaan van der Stel and spanning four era’s right up to the current era. Student Inge Froelich was also knowledgeable and friendly when guiding us on a separate tour of the wine cellars, high up on a hill with the most magnificent views. In charge of the wine tasting centre, Arnoux Tredoux conducted a most pleasant and informative wine-tasting event. Our final stop was The Stables where I enjoyed one of the best meals I have even tasted – roast chicken and corn followed by deep-fried ice cream.
We are extremely grateful to the wonderful team who provided us with this memorable experience. A visit to Vergelegen Wine Estate, a member of the Anglo American group, is highly recommended.

Overall a beautiful venue. Would highly recommend booking in advance for wine tasting due to high demand. We visited Vergelegen after two past attempt to secure a table but they were unfortunately fully booked. The gentlemen who looked after us was named Dwayne. He was highly professional, knowledgeable and provided the most amazing service I have experienced on my holiday in South Africa. The wines on offer with the tasting course were delicious. Dwayne ran us through the history of the wines which provided greater insight into the wine we tasted and uplifted the experience to a level I have never experienced before. I highly recommend Dwayne to anyone coming to this establishment, He will provide you with an experience you will never forget. Keep up the awesome work Dwayne!

Had dinner at the revamped Camphors at Vergelegen wine estate.Relaxed friendly staff offered us fabulous starters & mains including a glass of wine for R350-00 or three courses and a glass of wine for R450. The home grown beetroot starter is amazing. My choice of mains was a huge ribeye steak perfectly cooked, tender and mouth watering .
Finally gone is the snooty funereal decor replaced with light and airy colors. The Camphers restaurant is affordable, locals friendly and thoroughly worthy of our visit.

Although the wine farm was magnificent, we were disappointed with the service at The Stables restaurant today - especially as it was a surprise lunch for my elderly parents. We had to shift our table midway through our meal to accommodate a large birthday party gathering (20 plus people) who all loudly squeezed past our table without masks on - in a pandemic, while we were eating. Instead of humbly apologising, the manager became very defensive and spoke disrespectfully at my elderly father who was annoyed by the relocation. We also had to ask for a wine menu and cutlery to serve condiments, and one meal was served 15 after the others had arrived. Not the usual standard we are used to as regular patrons - so rather disappointed.

Vergelegen Estate in Somerset West, in the Western Cape in South Africa is well known for its spectacular gardens. Our group of six, however, visited Vergelegen Estate for the Vineyard/Winery and Environmental tours. These tours are offered as separate tours at very reasonable fares, even for local tourists. We chose to do a combination of both. After a quick coffee at the Stables Restaurant, our Guide, Arnoux, gave us a friendly welcome and had the combi ready for us to start the tour. What impressed us right away were the facts and figures Arnoux had at his fingertips. He seemed to be deeply passionate about the estate and is familiar with the history, as well as the future vision and development of the farm. Yes, it is in fact a farm. So much more than the estate that is normally portrayed. It is well worth a visit.

We are loving our rejuvenated Vergelegen tours as it gives us an opportunity to show visitors the broader 3000ha property and all that has been achieved with regards to our environment and sustainable farm projects. Many thanks for the great review.

Hi, Jen. What would you like to know about this attraction?
We will be in Stellenbosch Friday, 15MAR - do we need reservations to tour the winery and for wine tasting? What are the fees involved?
If needed, how do we make reservations?
Thanks much.

Echo all the above comments. The BEST wine estate to visit by far. The wines are available less expensively in normal SA retail stores, and internationally, and are excellent.
