I used to live in Hout Bay so I absolutely love the area! However this time we were visiting from London so a few years had passed since I was last there. Dunes restaurant is still great for some drinks in the sun overlooking the beach and we stayed at The Chapman Peak hotel which was beautiful (highly recommend). One thing to note though is that the ocean is actually polluted, you see the streams of sewage going into the beach. You will also notice signs at the beach stating these warnings. One thing we noticed as well which never used to be the case is that when you walk barefoot on the sand towards the harbour you’ll notice your feet feeling like it’s stood on loads of sharp glass. Turns out it fibre glass from the boat repairs in the harbour that’s blowing onto the sand. My boyfriend and I had to spend ages with tweezers trying to get all the shards out of our feet. So please be careful!!

Hout Bay market is a great vibe for food and local shops, I’d recommend you catching an Uber there if you don’t have a car as it’s not very safe to walk to as it’s right next to an informal settlement.

Chapmans Peak drive is close by and super worth it! Rent your own car so that you can stop and take in the views!

Overall, some great spots in the area, just be mindful of the beach comments mentioned above as I think a few tourists are oblivious to it and hotels are not exactly informing their guests of it as it would probably impact their business.

So much potential. This beach should be pristine, but there is garbage on the beach. In spite of all the unemployment, there is nobody cleaning the beach. Unfortunately, the City of Cape Town does not appear very competent. Or they have other priorities.

This is a wonderful hotel. The rooms are fantastic with very generous bathrooms. There is a very relaxed atmosphere in the hotel and all the staff were extremely helpful . Breakfast was a highlight and again great service. If you get a chance to stay here do !

Two men followed my husband while begging for money. They were relentless and continued to follow us as we tried to walk away. The area did not feel safe for tourists. I recommend going to Camps Bay Beach which has great restaurants right in the water. Houts Bay Beach is beautiful but lacks shops and restaurants that cater to tourists.

Got off the hoho bus here as it is a pretty bay surrounded by the mountains. Picked up unusual mussel shells on the beach. Went for a paddle in the very clean sea which was warmer than the UK in late spring! Beach had very white sand but needed to wash my feet carefully afterwards as the sand felt quite sharp when it dried. Nearby fish and chips straight from the boats at Muriels made it a great stop then back on the hoho.

It would seem there is very fine fibre glass on the beach that's ended up in our children's feet with no warning signs around.

Must be the best beach in Cape Town for me, an easy walk, and generally clean. It's also a safe beach, though lots of suspicious vendors hanging around

It took me a little bit less than an hour by MiCii Bus from Green Point in Cape Town to get to this beach (bus stop Northshore). Perhaps of all the (harbour) activity around, the beach is not as appealing as Camps Bay or Llandudno. Still in combination with exploring the port with the piers and fish restaurants, it is a nice outing. Within walking distance from the beach is the embarkation point for the cruise to Duikers Island.
