This historic estate was originally part of the great La Provence farm

given to French Huguenot farmers in 1694. Over the years the property was divided and the portion which is now Rickety Bridge was granted to Paulina De Villiers,

one of the first female land owners in South Africa, in 1797.

In the late 1980's the estate became known as Rickety Bridge due

to the old railway sleeper bridge which crossed the Franschhoek River

and provided the entry point to the estate. The rickety bridge was replaced in 1996 and the new bridge provides a safe crossing over the river.

Today, Rickety Bridge is a stately Franschhoek winery which has gone from strength to strength in recent years and the memory and pioneering spirit of Paulina De Villiers is celebrated by the flagship range of wines, Paulina's Reserve. These distinctive wines, as well as the renowned Rickety Bridge classic range and the Foundation Stone Range, have received many accolades and high praise in recent years.

Wine tasting and lunch

We visited with friends, did the wine tasting and had a lovely cheese and meat platter to accompany it. The staff were all very knowledgeable and there was a good atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to win at a charity auction generously donated by the owner Duncan a 5 night stay in the impressive Manor house. We had the ground floor room which was full of charm and character with a great comfy bed. The service from the moment we arrived was superb. Cassie and Tanya could not have been more... More

Great wine, delicious food and amazing mountain views. Try the African trio dessert - very yummy. Get to the winery by car or as part of the Franschhoek Tram. Well worth a visit

The staff at Rickety Bridge Tasting room may be commended on their enthusiasm, knowledge and delivery. We went as a couple to this winery to their Tasting Room. We were impressed with the service and delivery. We came on the Frankshoek wine Tram . Four wines were pre selected and they were wonderful. The waiter ensured we were on time... More

Lovely setting and some very wine wines. Staff are most engaging (very important) as well as knowledgeable and they are generous with their samplings (their philosophy is ‘we don’t feel you can truly appreciate a wine unless you have a full mouthful’ ..music to any wine-lover’s ears!) Their Sauvignon Blanc is totally refreshing and has a nice long finish. They... More

Enjoyable and more casual in setting than other great wineries we visited whilst in South Africa, food was good, wine fine and a nice setting. Well worth dropping in and trying.

Were here for lunch on a sunny Tuesday. The service is great! Rickety Bridge's staff is very thoughtful and helpful. Lunch was outstanding and the wines very good. If in Franchhoek, make sure to pay a visit to Rickety Bridge Winery.

Although the location was very nice, the wine tasting experience seemed decidedly amateur. There was only little information given on the wines - no water was provided or literature. Not up to the standards of other wine tasting experiences.
