Yesterday, I and my friends drove to this Greenwood Garden in New Jersey. We initially planned to take some pictures with our digital cameras. But we were told that only point and shoot cameras and cell phones were allowed to be used. We tried to explain that the pictures were for personal use, not commercial use. I told the staffs that it was a very strange rule and I asked her the difference between using a point and shoot cameras and cell phones and digital cameras to take pictures. She replied that digital camera was professional and the Greenwood Garden is trademarked. I told her that that point and shoot cameras and cell phones could take crispy clear pictures too. This rule doesn't make any sense at all. Beside this ridiculous rule, we found the garden is not well maintained, small and not attractive at all. It was the first time and absolutely the last time for us to visit this so-called garden.

Thank you for your sharing your concerns.
We take to heart that Greenwood’s natural and manmade beauty inspires photography enthusiasts. At the same time, our mission is to provide guests an oasis, a retreat from the intensity of modern life. Unfortunately, we have learned that it can be challenging to ensure a high-quality visitor experience and prevent damage to our historic site when we allow equipment other than cell phones or pocket-sized cameras on general visitation days. That said, from time to time, we offer programs that allow for guided DSLR photography in the garden. We encourage you to check our website for program updates.

I've already reviewed it, but we went back again today and took a lot of pictures. This time we packed a lunch and ate at the picnic table on the patio.

This is a hidden gem off of Old Short Hills Road in Short Hills. Trip adviser has it listed as being in Summit but it is actually in Short Hills. This 28 acre public garden was a private estate until 2003. It is a very pleasant way to spend 1 to 2 hours strolling the gardens. It is not wheelchair accessible and there is uneven terrain and stairs to navigate.

A joy from start to finish. This is what elegance and gardens should look like. Welcoming and wonderful. Take someone you love or who loves nature.

I have visited a few times and am always struck by the beauty of the location and the interesting old statues, pathways and pavilions. If you're interested in learning more, the gardens have been written up frequently in the New York Times. Many of the statues are covered in moss, which adds to their charm. By the way, the gardens are in Short Hills, not in Summit. I highly recommend it, although it wouldn't be a good place to go if you have mobility issues.

Greenwood Gardens is a 28-acre oasis suitable for relaxing walks and imaginings of a long-ago era. The original property also included the public park immediately adjacent to the house and outbuildings. Greenwood is not open every day of the week so be sure to check their website before arriving.

Joan who was our docent was very charming and very informative.

Wonderful. Beautiful. Quiet. Peaceful. Stunning. A perfect mix of formal gardens and wildness. Take a tour to hear the history of the garden. Come in the spring to see the lilacs and cherries. In the summer to see the roses, and summer flowers. The fall will bring bright yellow maples. Go!
