Sail aboard the Piscataqua, a traditional reproduction of the flat-bottom gundalow barges that were once prevalent along local waterways. Educational, informative and fun, a sail is a great way to explore the sights and sounds of the Piscataqua River. Morning, afternoon, and sunset sails run Memorial Day through Columbus Day, and we offer weekly specialty sails featuring music, guest speakers, local tastings, and more. Private charters are also available.

Though the gundalow has engine power it's true charm lies under sail. While the crew explains the rich history of the vessel and it's role in the early commerce of the area in bygone days the charm of the coastline and various lighthouses surround you. Be sure to dress appropriately as it is often cooler out on the water.

We just took a wonderful sunset cruise on the gundalow. A beautiful Fall night! Boat and commentary is great -- you learn why gundalows were so important to Portsmouth and the economy. Crew is personable and competent. You even get to help with the sail! It gets a little cool on the water so bring a jacket (not so for... More

Sailed on 9/17/16 Sunset Cruise. Last Saturday of the Summer and what a great time. Ordering and printing the tickets online was easy. Confirmation/Remnder email prior to was a nice touch. The boat is only 5 years old, and somehow the designers, builders, and volunteer crew all manage to bring you back in time for 2 hours. Knowledgeable and friendly... More

For a pleasant few hours on the water, a great tour of Portsmouth Harbor, and interesting historical commentary, I would highly recommend an outing on the Gundalow. Ours was a family outing on the afternoon history cruise, with ages ranging from 5 to 69, and it seemed to me that absolutely everyone had a great time. The Gundalow is staffed... More

A group of us thought a sail out on the harbor would be great way to spend a very warm afternoon. This did not disappoint. The crew was great and we got to participate. We brought our own lunch and wine and enjoyed the 2-hour trip.

This was an unexpected delight! The layout of the boat made it very easy to interact with other passengers and the crew. It was a hands on experience as you could help raise and lower the sail and the young kids helped "steer" the boat. There was a brief narration about the history of the gundalow boat as well as... Safe, nice view from the water. Wish the description was better. I believe it indicated "country" music. The couple playing was outstanding, however not taking requests that dated after 1932 made our sail a bit strenuous. I believe rewording to folks music would be more ideal. Would like to know about building\structures etc. too. Maybe with a microphone?

Took the two hour midday gundalow tour of portsmouth harbor. This historic replica barge is rustic with seating on storage bins. It's wide open so the views are sensational. We had just a few others on our trip so it wasn't crowded. The boat only went out to the mouth of the river and then back to the dock in... More
