My great niece needed to do a school project about her ancestors and she decided to do it on her father’s side of the family. Her great grandmother and the AMAZING women at the Exeter Historical Society helped her uncover some exciting information and complete her report, while learning so much. With the Historical Society’s assistance, she was able to trace her ancestors back to England and the ship that they sailed on and when they arrived in the US in 1638. She also found that though them, she is related to two of the founding families of Exeter, NH, and that one of her ancestors signed the Declaration of Independence!
The guardians of the treasure trove of information and artifacts at the Exeter Historical Society are knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. Make an appointment today to find out more about your family history or to learn more about Exeter’s history. Well worth a visit!!

Located on Front st in Exeter you could mistake the Historical society for a part of Phillips Exeter academy. Great stop for history buffs wanting to know more about Exeter with plenty of artifacts to inform one of days gone by. Only very good because parking is limited and for some access can be a little challenging. Best bet is to make this part of a walking tour of Exeter.

We stopped for a few hours in Exeter NH and in attempting to learn a little about the town, stopped in at the historical society. What a treat! A lovely lady (I think her name was Pam) brought us through the building and shared stories of some of the town's founders as we walked through. Her presentations were lively and fun and it was a welcome surprise on a beautiful day in Exeter.

Starting with a copy of the original 1638 contract between the Town's founder, John Wheelwright, and the local native Americans right up to present day records, this is a hidden gem. Also strong on genealogy of local families. Strong curator.

The Exeter Historical Society houses a great small museum which showcases Exeter's long history. This stop is a must for historians and history buffs alike. Stop and talk to the curator who can share wonderful stories about the town, and direct you to some of the more fascinating places in Exeter.

The Exeter Historical Society is a wonderful repository of research with very useful staff eager to help. It also holds some artifacts of this Revolutionary War Capitol town and is a good place for a quick visit.

Visited the Historical Society as part of my ongoing research. They have a great book collection that covers more than just Exeter but also have a fabulous historic newspaper collection and found a wonderful obituary for one of the folks I'm researching. While they helped me they were also busy preparing for an exhibit about either medicine or dentistry - nice to see the involvement of young folks in the museum who were learning how to read these old documents!

I recently attended a lecture at the historical society about the history of NH women's activities in art, politics, literature, medicine, and several other areas since the founding of the state. It was very interesting and informative. I had just moved to Exeter 6 months ago and previously not known about this organization, which is a good source of information for family and NH history if you are doing research

We are visiting for a few days in early October and looking for information on Henry Magoon, a Scottish prisoner, and / or his descendants. We would also appreciate hints on what places we might visit in this regard. Thank you. Wendy Rossi
